There is only one small window in the basement. With over half of our home area under ground level, making the most of this space means, as my kids say, making some creative design techniques feel “creepy.”
Today, I share ideas for five basement family rooms to make the dark space feel bright and attractive.
1. Choose the appropriate paint color
I love the bold wall colours in other areas of the basement home, but I generally recommend choosing a colour in the white or cream family. Light colors reflect light and make the space bright and ventilate.
When I drew the family room in the basement, I used two colors. White pigeon and Sailcrossboth by Benjamin Moore. These colors make the entire room feel much brighter than before. The color of the canvas adds a sense of warmth to the space thanks to its warm beige tone.
2. Add art to the wall
Adding art to your basement walls will allow you to change the space. In a basement with a low ceiling, we recommend works that give the illusion of height. Choose some large and tall pieces you love. You will be amazed at how different they make.

3. Bring a lot of textiles
Textiles such as rugs, pillows, blankets and more are the antidotes to any naturally dark and cold space. Like a soft rug, I go looking for something cozy and charming (I love the luxury of it Scandinavian knot Rug) or thick knit blanket. Add multiple throw pillows with lots of patterns to your sofa. Any space will instantly feel warm and more attractive with some good textiles.
4. Focus on lighting
Lighting is an impactful way to bring warmth and light to your basement –especially A basement without windows. You can attach recessed lights or wall sconces, add lamps, or get creative with string lights as accents to give your room a cozy atmosphere.
Our basement family room offers the option to turn on recessed lights while you’re doing laundry downstairs and playing sports with the kids. If you want a cozy atmosphere, turn on some lamps.

5.Incorporate some unexpected furniture
Don’t be afraid to add furniture that brings personality to your space. The blue modular cross section added to the basement has plenty of personality thanks to its modestness, tension in the buttons, and “marshmallow-like” curves. I also love the funky little stool that serves as a seat and a place to put drinks. Layering unique textures will always help bring warmth to your space, so consider this when choosing your furniture.
