I’ve made a lot of cheese boards and have learned quite a bit about which components end up being crowd-pleasers. After all, the best part of a cheese board is all the flavor combinations and textures that come together to create the perfect bite. Organizing items in small bowls or plates adds texture and makes cleanup easier. Enjoy by slicing cheese or fruit. It’s always important to add different textures and flavors to your cheese. Choose a common theme or flavor profile to make pairing easier. But just have fun! The cheese board is the centerpiece, and the more creative you get, the more fun it will be.
There’s a reason cheese boards are the best trick in my funny toolkit. It’s completely customizable, you can use materials you already have on hand, and you can prepare most of the ingredients in advance. This holiday season, I’m turning to one of my favorite recipes (in three different ways) to make my cheeseboard even more delicious: chutneys.
Why chutneys are the secret to the perfect holiday board
I love a cheese board with a little fig jam or orange marmalade, but there’s something even better about chutney. First, chutneys have a similar texture but are less sweet than jams because they use some form of vinegar or acid. If you have a wide variety of cheeses, eating one with a bit of sourness will provide the perfect flavor to counteract the richness.
We have some favorite chutney recipes that go well with a variety of cheeses, crackers, nuts, and other garnishes. I love pairing sharp cheddar cheese with crunchy crackers for spicy cranberry chutney. The flavorful onion chutney is best paired with rich, creamy brie and sliced baguette. Warm apple chutney is perfect with caramelized pecans and seedy crackers. Pair it with your favorite ingredients you have and we guarantee your holiday gathering will be perfect.
