As we prepare for the upcoming holiday season, who else is ready to embrace all the comforts? The weather brings a welcome coolness, we start packing everything into the house, and the pumpkins take over the last baked goods and drinks. It’s time to slow down, relax, and revisit my favorite part of autumn, recipe repertoire. Yes, there are pumpkin bread, pies, cookies, etc., but for me, humble apples are the true hero ingredients of autumn. And with that, the best apple recipes will be introduced to enjoy the season.

How to choose the right apple

When it comes to fallen baking and cooking, not all apples are created equal. The best variety balances sweet and tart, and has a firm texture that can hold up under the heat even when baked. The classics are as follows:

  • Grandma Smith. This is an apple that will stop sweetness like a dream. These slices are perfect for classic apple pie, potato chips, and recipes that contrast with sugar and caramel.
  • honeycrisp. Sweet, juicy, completely crisp – it’s basically the queen of snack apples. Honeycrisp apples are fresh, thrown into autumn salads, or layered on galettes with no star texture.
  • Breburn. It’s well-balanced and versatile, sweet and mixed with tarts. The lesser known variety, Braeburn apples are suitable for delicious pairings such as apple tarts, grilled apples, and pork and roasted vegetables.
  • Pink woman. It has a sweet tart bite that feels vibrant, crisp, playful and bright. The sharp texture of the pink woman is perfect for salads, caramel apples and pies that require layers of flavor.
  • Jonagold. Visit the best worlds of both the cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious. These apples are perfect for apple potato chips, sauces and cakes that require both sweetness and structure.
