As a “lesser but better” girlie, I loved seeing the resurgence of minimalism in the cultural conversation. From digital minimalism and the analogue resurgence to the sophisticated simplicity of ’90s aesthetics (hello, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy), stripping things down can suddenly make you feel chic again. But after years of editing and curating my life, and a lot of trial and error, the biggest lesson for those interested in minimalism is this: Minimalism, especially when it comes to style and beauty, is not about copying a certain look. It’s about discovering what works for you and coming back to it again and again.
Still, even the most dedicated minimalist can accumulate a little more stuff over time. Earlier this year, I opened my makeup drawer and realized I had crossed the line from curated to crowded. So I decided to start anew.
Over the past few months, I’ve been streamlining my routine, from refining my closet essentials to simplifying weeknight cooking, and ultimately editing my beauty products down to the items I reach for every day. The result is a minimalist makeup routine that’s effortless and sophisticated, and completely my own. Beyond that, successful products emerge.

Carefully select daily makeup essentials
A minimalist makeup routine doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, I would argue that it’s one of the chicest things a girl can have. There’s something so confident about knowing exactly what you like and reaching for the same few products every day. In a world that’s always pushing the next release or trend, this kind of clarity is refreshing.
So how do you curate a collection of daily makeup essentials that will really work for you?
Step 1: Purge
First, it’s a little daunting. It means letting go of products you no longer need. The good news? Spring energy has a sense of reset, making it the perfect time to spruce up your beauty routine.
I like to start by moving everything in my vanity to one spot where I can see everything at once. Start editing from there. Expired products or items you haven’t touched in months will appear first. Then pick another one and eliminate impulse buys or once-popular items that no longer excite you.
What remains is a smaller, more manageable collection. This is the perfect starting point for building a streamlined, minimalist makeup routine.
Step 2: Find what you actually use
From there, I take a closer look at the products I naturally gravitate towards. Are these items that I really like, or do I just use them out of habit? These are products that I really can’t live without. The rest will go.
Of course, I save a few things like a bright lip or sparkly eyes every now and then for special occasions, and I keep a few variations of shades for each season. But the goal is simple. It’s all about making your morning routine a breeze by centering your daily makeup products.
Step 3: Elevate your essentials
I saved my “best” beauty products for special occasions and reached for mid-range essentials every day. But in the words of Joan Didion, “Every day is everything.”
The foundation of a minimalist makeup routine is less, but better products. Nothing makes me feel more at home than starting my day with something I truly love.
Step 4: Take a test drive
Once you’re done editing, try out your routine for a few days. Do you think it’s easy? Do the products work well together? Do they take longer than you expected?
Continue to edit, adjust, and simplify until you have a minimalist makeup routine that fits your tastes and lifestyle. Please believe me. Once you find your edit, getting ready will be effortlessly chic.
10 of my favorite minimalist makeup products
My own minimalist makeup essentials are a combination of longtime staples that I’ve repurchased over the years, as well as some recent discoveries that have quickly earned a permanent place in my routine. Although brands and formulations vary, they all share two key elements: superior quality and easy versatility.
As a beauty editor, I’m always testing hot new launches: products with on-trend ingredients and packaging designed to stop you scrolling. However, the items that can truly be incorporated into your daily makeup routine are those that have long-lasting power. It wears beautifully all day long, doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin (this is non-negotiable), and works just as well on the 100th use as it did on the first.
Step 1: Preparation
I always believe that great makeup starts with great skin. All other products will look better if your skin is in good condition. This means you will need much less makeup overall.
I’m a big fan of multi-tasking formulas, so many of my favorite skin care products also work as the first step in my makeup routine. Think tinted sunscreens that even out skin tone while protecting your skin, or skin whitening fluids that add subtle brightness. Together, they create a moisturizing, healthy-looking base that makes the rest of your minimalist makeup routine a breeze.
Step 2: Create the base
For me, a minimalist base means keeping coverage light and I want my skin to look natural. A simple swipe of concealer or sheer skin tone product will even out your skin tone while highlighting your natural texture.
If you want fuller coverage, it’s important to find a formula that works beautifully with your skin. The goal of a minimalist makeup routine isn’t necessarily to reduce coverage. Choose products that feel effortless, reliable, and worth reaching for every day.
Step 3: Eyes
There are days when I only wear mascara. Other days I skip it completely. My eye makeup tends to change depending on the day and mood, but the three products I use most often are always the same.
Step 4: A pop of color
Whether you go for a bold lip, a natural flush, or a minimalist makeup routine, you can benefit from a little color. This is the easiest way to add some vibrancy to your face while keeping your overall look effortless and understated.
Bonus: Set and protect
The final step in my routine is a light setting spray to keep everything looking fresh all day long. I also like to keep a reset sunscreen spray in my bag. It’s an easy way to protect your skin and refresh your makeup on the go.
