At the time, Bowen said farewell: Instagram. “I loved working at SNL, and most of all I loved the people,” he wrote. “I was there at a time when a lot of things in the world started to seem pointless, but working on 30 Rock taught me the value of just showing up when people make it worthwhile.”

In his recent episode, Las Culturistas On the podcast, Bowen opens up about why he decided to part ways with co-host Matt Rogers. SNL Almost seven years later, his answer about the public’s perception of his work was surprisingly candid.

“The current entertainment ecosystem is so disrupted that people either don’t have a perfectly valid reason to stay long term, or often don’t have the privilege to stay as long as they would like,” he mused while discussing his decision to leave. “I’m doing such a great job of being able to say I stayed as long as I wanted to.”

Bowen later revealed that he was initially “not sure” whether he would return. SNLis currently in its 51st season, and he said he was “very happy” with the end. He then addressed the criticism surrounding his acting work. SNLwhich apparently factored in his eventual departure.

“I feel like the whole time I was there I was really stuck in the idea that there was no scope for what I was doing,” Bowen said. Moreover, he expressed a certain degree of sympathy for the idea. “I knew I wasn’t going to play a father. I wasn’t going to play something generic in sketches. This is a sketch show, and each one is about four minutes long. They’re short and necessarily folded, so they’re based on archetypes.”

“These archetypes also have a relationship to the common, and the commonality lies in whiteness and being a canvas to build on. I came pre-stretched, pre-dyed. People were over-determining what I was. It was, ‘Oh, it’s just a gay Asian guy.’ SNL”

“So when I try to work outside of that, they either completely ignore me or it just falls apart because they’re like, ‘Oh, he’s still gay and Asian.'”

“You’ve done so much for us,” Matt said. “I don’t think people necessarily realize they’re being homophobic when they say things like that.” Bowen’s response was as insightful as it was diplomatic.

“I think range is a myth. Whether it’s taxed or subsidized, it’s all about taste.”
