Whitman Walker Health describes her status as a leader in primary health, LGBTQ+ healthcare, education and research with special expertise in HIV care, but she invites her to participate in the 39th Annual Walk and HIV to the 5K Run.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th at Anacostia Park, DC.
“For almost 40 years, Walk to end HIV has been a Whitman Walker signature community fundraiser and one of Washington, DC’s most unified events,” the health agency said in a statement.
“Every year, thousands of residents, advocates, and allies wear shoes to walk, run, run and support Whitman Walker’s mission to provide reliable, high quality, comprehensive, accessible health care to those who have been affected by HIV/AIDS,” the statement said.
“A walk is more than just a fundraiser. It’s a movement. Every step will help advance HIV prevention, support long-term survivors, and expand access to care for those most affected, especially the youth and residents of wards 7 and 8.”
The statement notes that Whitman Walker will celebrate the fourth year this year when he held an event at Anacostia Park in nearby Southeast DC, where Whitman Walker’s biggest facility and headquarters are now located. For the past few years, walks have been held in downtown DC. The statement calls for a decision to call the event’s location “a bold move in solidarity with communities we know are most affected by the epidemic.”
According to the statement, “Participants will enjoy a lively morning featuring a lively community warm-up, music, entertainment, a stage programme that highlights local leaders, supporters and stories of hope.” The event also said it will offer a free shuttle service from the Anacostia Metro station, where some participants are expected to arrive.
Registration for walk-and-runs will begin at 8am, runs are scheduled to begin at 8:45am, with walk programs and entertainment scheduled to begin at 8:50am, and run-and-runs will begin at 9:30am when Run-and-Walk ends.
Revenue from the walk “directly supports Whitman Walker’s comprehensive community-based healthcare and ensures that everyone has access to positive, high quality services regardless of income, race, gender identity, or HIV status.”
The start and end of the run and walk will be at Anacostia Park, located at Dr. 1500 Anacostia, adjacent to the park’s Jet Pavilion, the statement said.
“The road to the park will be closed at 8:30am, so we will plan our arrival accordingly,” the statement adds. “The roads will resume at 9:30am.”
