Two Indonesian university students have been declared publicly canned for involvement in same-sex relationships.
The 24- and 18-year-old couple were arrested on November 7, 2024 after a vigilante in Banda Aceh’s neighbours suspected of being gay, broke into a naked room and hugged each other naked.
Chief judge Sakwana said the two students have been proven to have had gay sex “legally and persuasively.”
“During trial, it was proven that the defendant committed illegal activities, including kissing and sex,” she said. “As a Muslim, the defendant should support the Sharia Act, which beats Aceh.”
The three judge panel opposed the man being sentenced to a maximum sentence of 100 eyelashes as he was polite in court, working with the authorities and an outstanding student who had not been previously convicted.
Prosecutors requested that both men receive at least 80 eyelashes, but the judge decided to punish the 24-year-old more severely because he believed he encouraged the relationship and provided a place for sexual activity. Associated Press.
The male prosecutors and defense attorneys said they would accept the sentence and not appeal it.

Indonesia is a majority Muslim country, but now only the state of Asey is enforcing a version of the Sharia law. As a result, more than 100 people are publicly tinned every year.
Additionally, the state has enacted criminal laws that enforce even non-Muslims to comply with Sharia’s laws, imposing penalties for so-called “moral” crimes. Some canned people are engaged in extramarital affairs, gambling, drinking alcohol, women dressed tightly, and men skipping Friday prayers.
At least three couples convicted of engaging in same-sex relationships have been publicly canned after being convicted in religious court.
As reported by Amnesty InternationalIn 2009, the ACEH state government adopted prescribing the law Death by stoned for adultery Up to 100 eyelashes for same-sex relationships. The stake clause was eventually removed due to pressure from the Indonesian government.
