“Buffy the Vampire Slayer says James Sweeney. says James Sweeney. Career – “This” is a film production. And the film that the 35-year-old director logs into Zoom is a film production. Twinless.

“Looking back now, what really resonated? Buffy It was a reflection of life and it was not present or contained in a genre,” he continues. and [Twinless] Not only is it a combination of DNA and structure in a dark chromatic comedy, it is also a psychological thriller. ”

Twinless That’s it – more than that. A sharp and entertaining quest for friendship, obsession and sadness, the story follows two men who lost their twins in an accident and formed a strong bond after meeting in a support group. Rocky (the poignant Dylan O’Brien) is straight, and Dennis (Sweeney, Tart, Turt) is gay, but their friendship quickly becomes a source of comfort. Each fills the missing pieces in their opponent’s puzzle.

The story may seem simple, but Sweeney proves an insincerely clever writer, leading an unexpected path to pinnacle in perfect return. The film is a stunning testimony of nuance, both in storytelling and character construction.

We’ll talk about Sweeney’s twin experiences. Was the film rooted in something from his youth?

“I had twin friends and I dated the same twins,” he says. “And right after we broke up, I wrote my first draft. But the film is very, very emotionally true, but not really true.”

He added that he “fostered many memories from my childhood, which was fascinated by twins.” Sister, Sister -It was just my cultural periodist. I was learning about the idea of twin bereavement that sparked the concept. I found it to be a very unique and profound loss.

It wasn’t easy for Sweeney to get it Twinless production. “No one in town wanted to make it,” he confesses. “They told it. I sometimes questioned my sanity… But it had all the ingredients for what I wanted to see, and I believed that if it was something I loved, others would love it too.”

Those who see the trailer may make a mistake Twinless In the case of a complete thriller, the story contains some surprising twists, but is considered a rich, heart-warming, dramatic comedy.

“There was studio and marketing pressure to lean on the elements of a psychological thriller,” Sweeney said of the trailer. “What I was trying to tell is that there is more to the story than Logline alone suggests. My hope is that the surprise of the film is exactly how humanist it is.”

He praises the trailer team. The trailer had to be careful not to give anything. “It was very challenging,” he says. “There are many things we don’t want to ruin. It was really hard to navigate, so they were handcuffing and working.”

Sweeney, a semi-Korean and gay person, says Hollywood tends to “put people in the box.”

“I try to be very careful about telling a series of versatile stories,” he says. “And I think it’s shown in the fabric of this film. It’s not diluted for a straight audience” – nodding to the thunderous gay sex scene in the film – but at the same time, I think this is a film for everyone.

“I consider myself a strange filmmaker,” he adds.

“And while I don’t mean that other queer films degrade, it’s something that’s in my mind,” he continues. “The main relationship in this film is between a gay man and a straight man, and I can’t think of another film centered around that dynamic. I’m conscious of that. Just like Asian filmmakers, I don’t feel pressure to represent all Asians. I just want to tell an original story that connects with people.”
