Written and directed by Carmen Emmi, Plain Cross It’s a tragically intimate gay drama. Set in Syracuse in the 1990s, the film stars Tom Bryce.Hunger Games: Songbird and Snake BalladRussell Toby, a young secret police officer tasked with arresting a gay man as Lucas.I’m watching) As Andrew, a man who changes everything when obligations clash with desire.
What starts as another stab wounder in the mall bathroom becomes much more electrical and impossible to deny.
“The last strange people will not die.”
I’ll make it for Emmy Plain Cross It was always about hope and expression.
“I wanted to end with a hopeful note. If I had an alternative poster that says that queer people won’t die at the end of this film, I would probably make it,” Emi said. “When I wrote this, it was really important to me. I think every story is important. I wanted to create the story I needed to see as a teenager.”
The story is set in the 90s, but Emi emphasized that the inspiration was truly recent. “I was originally inspired by the stab wound operation that took place in 2014, and it happened in other California counties until 2019,” he explained. “People are hearing about the plot of this film. They thought it was in the ’70s, ’90s. I can’t believe it happened. And I’m like it was happening in 2019.”

“As I’ve seen, it’s close to my first sight.”
For Bryce, Lucas’s pull to Andrew was undeniable from the initial appearance.
“It’s approaching the first sight of a lover, as I’ve seen in films and in real life,” Blythe said. “Together with others, Lucas was able to deny charm. Even if he felt charm or curiosity, he could deny it and push it down for his own survival. But when he meets Andrew, he feels undeniable.
Tovey said, “You recognize Andrew’s kindness and you’re not hopeless about him. You’re very grown-up and confident. And suddenly, there’s this gay guy who can lead you to this next chapter of your life.”
Strange intimacy on the screen
Emi was intentional about how she created the intimacy between Lucas and Andrew.
“What I really wanted to do was show someone’s first clumsy and clumsy. “What I saw was a hyper-romantic, shiny version of a sex scene. Even if it was in the wilderness or something, it was still appealing. And I really think how raw and messy it is and how it’s a bit funny, as well as exhilarating.”
The film doesn’t skip many “almost attempts” and instead unfolds their relationship with realism and vulnerability. “It was important to me, I think I’m making fun of it,” Emi explained.
On-screen mentorship and off
That sense of discovery is tied to the dynamics of film mentorship. Both Blythe and Toby felt deeply while making it.
“Mentership has been a big part of the conversation for us,” Blythe said. “Russell nurtured it really early in the process… Lucas definitely learned from Andrew and was able to have safe sex even to that house. He doesn’t know how to do it, and Russell made the really good point of making it.
Blythe continued. “It was a mirror of my experience on set because I have been a Russell fan for many years and have admired his career for a long time.
Find love in family and friendship
For both actors, the most powerful moments were not only between Lucas and Andrew, but also between the women who supported him.
Amy Forsyth, who plays Lucas, tells him: “You just had to have those feelings.” For Toby, the line means “a lot. Amy Forsyth is incredible, but what a beautiful character. Is she generous? She can be horrible to you. She can be ashamed of you. She doesn’t choose to love you.
Blythe highlighted the closing scene of the film with Lucas’ mother, played by Maria Digia. “The complicated sense of hope we got from our mother… you feel it’s really complicated, but things are fine in the end.
Tovey simply summed it up: “Incredible. She does about 40 things in one look. She is a very clever and a great actress.”
A strange story about choosing hope
By intimacy, mentorship and focusing on family, Plain Cross They resist strange tragedy in favour of survival and connection.
“I hope people will take away their hopeful feelings from that,” Emi said. Plain Cross I’m currently playing in some theaters.
