The annual report surveyed 1,500 U.S. youth ages 10 to 24 about their attitudes, preferences, and habits regarding entertainment media.

Among the report’s findings, we found that Gen Z watches more content than older adults think. They also prefer stories they can relate to, rather than those in the fantasy or superhero genres, for example. The report found that young people are less interested in sex and more concerned with portrayed friendships, especially those between people of different genders that do not develop into romantic feelings.

When young people list what they want to see in movies and TV, the first thing they say is “people who live a life similar to mine.” Unfortunately, in the overall rankings, “Non-binary and LGBTQIA+ identities” came in at number 18, behind “uplifting stories,” “superheroes,” and “systemic injustice.”

But for LGBTQ+ respondents, “non-binary and LGBTQIA+ identities” topped the list. For boys, “superheroes” came first, while for girls, “family life and relationships with parents” came first. And “romance and/or sex,” “partying and/or drugs and drinking,” and non-binary and LGBTQIA+ identities” ranked last for both men and women.
