Charli XCX struck the zeitgeist like lightning at Brat Summer 2024. brat — A chart-topping album, a feel, a song, and its particular color, green, permeated pop culture, queer culture, and even presidential politics, putting the British pop-dance artist at the center of a trend that captivated people around the world. time In a magazine, Aunt Kamala asked me, “Are you a brat?” Is she a brat? what teeth A kid?

It was a real phenomenon, as convincingly explained in . that momentan aptly titled mockumentary that takes a behind-the-scenes look at Charlie’s life inside the Brat Bubble.

Media montages of Charlie appearing everywhere from news shows to podcasts, parties, talk shows, videos, and concerts establish this singularly successful moment in her career. brat Anthems like “365” on the soundtrack established the nonstop party atmosphere that dominated the moment. But every party comes to an end.

The film depicts the pop star and her inner circle trying to figure out how to track the phenomenon, while her record company is more than happy to postpone the moment. Or, as Tammy, the head of her Atlantic Records label, puts it bluntly: “How do we keep this Brat going?”

Tammy, played by Rosanna Arquette, is one of the movie’s truly interesting characters. that moment. Record Company Executives isn’t a groundbreaking satire, but Arquette squeezes every drop of knowing, wry humor out of her deadpan presence.

Tammy promotes ideas like the Brat Credit Card and collaborates with Amazon Music. brat A touring concert film directed by the eccentric Scandinavian writer Johannes, played by Alexander Skarsgård (also funny).

Based on an idea by Charli XCX and directed and co-written by Aidan Zamiri, many of the film’s major conflicts stem from Charli and her team, especially creative director Celeste (Haley Benton Gates), clashing with Johannes. Charlie plans to make a concert film, and Johannes wants to document her life and fame in detail, the good, the bad, and the ugly, while also changing the look and presentation of the tour.

She may not like ceding control to Johannes, but his documentation ultimately isn’t that invasive or revealing. And aside from a cringe-worthy rant to manager Tim (Jamie Demetriou) in the back of a limousine and an unintentional social media tirade related to Brat’s credit card promotion, Charlie never looks as bad as this exaggerated version of himself.

Charli and Zamiri, the accomplished music video directors behind clips for Billie Eilish and FKA Twigs, could definitely have worked harder at this meta-deconstruction of 2020s pop celebrity, as this entire film is a joke she had in mind from the very beginning. Playing up bland clashes with other cool-girl celebs like Rachel Sennott and Kylie Jenner doesn’t stick out enough to float a bubble.

beauty Star Isaac Powell has an interesting but underwritten role as Lloyd, a different kind of celebrity friend in Charlie’s circle who is constantly filming content for her social media. As one of the icons of modern celebrity, the 24/7 content creator is a figure ripe for caricature and commentary, but nothing meaningful comes from that relationship here, or much of what’s going on in the world. that moment.

For a truly eye-opening look at current pop stardom, there’s nothing in this movie lurkerAn underrated 2025 thriller from director Alex Russell about a pop star’s stalker who infiltrates her idol’s inner circle. Somehow that movie’s harrowing prestige fiction feels closer to the truth. that momentThe false reality of.
