The 16-year-old was sentenced to juvenile facility until he was 21 after pleading guilty to five counts related to the murder of 39-year-old Brian Smith, aka “Barber,” aka The Boliced DJ, Barber and Stylist.
Prosecutors said Smith was seen in surveillance footage of a group that includes the 16-year-old while walking down T Street in the early hours of October 27th. He later became unconscious, suffering from head injuries and other injuries, blood in his nose and hands, and was taken to a local hospital.
The 39-year-old remained in coma at Virginia Hospital for more than a week before his death on November 7th. The cause of death was determined to be trauma of dull forces, and the incident was classified as murder.
The 16-year-old stole Smith’s cell phone – later pursued by the young man’s house – and so did his wallet. Prosecutors say the teenager and 17-year-old accomplice will use one of Smith’s credit cards to order food at McDonald’s and buy it at the Nike Store.

Police say surveillance footage shows a teenager trying to attack and steal an individual in the 1900 block of 14th Avenue NW after 5:50 pm robbed another person in the 1800 block of Vermont Avenue NW before fleeing to the vehicle. According to MPD press releasethey are also suspected of robbing the third victim in the 900 block of Rhode Island Avenue NE about 90 minutes later.
The robber victims also reported no injuries.
Under DC law, a young person can be sentenced to prison for crimes as serious as confinement in a youth detention center until the age of 21.
“It’s not as good as I’d like to have, but it can be given legally, so I’m very pleased with it,” said Smith’s mother, Lela Sandoval. Judgment.
Several of Smith’s friends, family and fellow DJs detailed Smith’s loving and friendly personality and spoke at the sentencing hearing, seeking the greatest penalty of his assailant.
“He was a remarkable, amazing person who was just filled with joy, fun, laughter, the best laugh I’ve heard of in my life,” Smith’s boyfriend Tyler told the court. “It was very difficult. I miss him.”
