Team GB’s Gus Kenworthy has sent a strong message to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and encouraged his supporters to make their voices heard.
Kenworthy’s message comes as ICE has come under increased scrutiny following two mass shootings in January. On January 24, federal agents shot and killed Preti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse. Renee Nicole Good, also 37, was shot and killed on January 7th. Both shootings by federal immigration agents occurred in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
On Thursday, February 5, the 34-year-old posted an image of himself skiing on Instagram. The camera is pointed at the ground, primarily the snow between his two skis, where the message “F*** ICE” is displayed. The message is written in warm yellow and you can see what is being said about yellow snow…
In the caption, the Olympian shared a message that followers can use to contact senators to limit ICE’s powers.
“To speak out and put pressure on ICE during the current DHS funding negotiations, call your senator at (202) 224-3121,” Kenworthy said.
Then he said: “Here’s a sample script. Hello, my name is.” [Your Name]and I am a voter from. [Your City, State]. I’m calling to urge the senator. [Name] Refuse to support a final Department of Homeland Security funding agreement that fails to meaningfully rein in ICE and the Border Patrol. ”
Congress has until February 13 to agree on a funding agreement affecting the Department of Homeland Security. Democrats are calling for stricter rules for ICE, including stronger coordination with local law enforcement and a ban on ICE officers wearing masks.
Kenworthy continued, “Innocent people are being murdered, and enough is enough. We cannot stand by and watch ICE continue to operate with unchecked power in our communities. The senator still has influence, and the senator still has influence.” [Name] We must use it to demand real guardrails and accountability, including removing ICE and CBP from our communities, ending blank check funding for brutality, and establishing clear limits on warrantless arrest, profiling, and enforcement in sensitive places like schools and hospitals. ”
At the end, he said, “Please pass this message on to your senators. Thank you.”
The image and script serve as a defiant message after weeks of growing anger as a result of ICE’s seemingly unpunished acts of terror on American streets.
Criticism of ICE was particularly high at last weekend’s Grammy Awards, where multiple winners criticized the agency in their speeches. Leading the charge is Song of the Year winner Billie Eilish, whose comments have sparked considerable backlash.
Kenworthy will represent Team GB at his fourth Winter Olympics in Italy. He won a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and represented the United States at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. He joined Team GB at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Some critics called Kenworthy a “traitor” for joining Team GB.
