new Report A publication by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law finds that an estimated 2.8 million Americans over the age of 13 identify as transgender.
According to NBC Newsthat figure represents about 1% of the US population in that age group. The failures are almost even. 34.2% are identified as trans men, 32.7% are identified as trans women, and 33.1% are identified as non-binary.
One statistic attracted particular attention on social media. Young Americans are much more likely to identify as transgender than older generations. Approximately 3.3% of people aged 13 to 17 are identified as transgender, compared to just 0.3% of people over the age of 65.
Like most issues involving the transgender community, the data has sparked anger among cultural conservatives on social media.
“There’s nothing natural about this,” former investment banker and author John Lefebbe posted a chart showing the trends.

A similar outrage may have been raised decades ago when the proportion of left-handed people suddenly rose among Americans born after 1910.
One X user posted a chart showing the rise and final leveling of left-handed people by their date of birth.

Just like today’s increase in transgender identification among young Americans, the rise in left-handedness is likely to reflect that society is more tolerant or at least informed.
Left-handed people have faced discrimination until recently, surprisingly. According to MassMutualchildren who tried to write and eat with their left hand were “corrected” in the 1960s.
In the past, left-handed people were considered immoral or demons.
“The devil himself was considered a southpaw, and he and the other demons were always reminiscent of left-handed gestures.” time The magazine focuses on medieval beliefs.
So, the little wonder that age differences in transgender identity are closely matched with age differences in acceptance of transgender people.
2022 Pu Research Vote 54% of Americans aged 18-29 think “larger social acceptance of people who are transgender” is a good thing for society, compared to just 28% of people over the age of 65.
People are more likely to live a real life when they feel supported by their peers and society as a whole. Who knew?
