Star is best known for her immersive DJ sets and intergalactic online series, 2099. She blends the futuristic atmosphere with the present issues so that people can easily digest it to see how our future is wild and how those in power can do these things. She aims to create art that not only guides and entertains Marsha P. Johnson’s spirit in her work, but also raises and informs. With so much confusion in the world, the presence of stars feels like a breath of fresh air.
Star is starting a new chapter. A Journey with Star Amelas. The show features live music, comedy sketches and celebrity guests.
We sat down with her to talk about the new show, The State of the World, and why Wigs is the key to her most entertaining character.
What can you tell us about your new show? A Journey with Star Amelas?
I wrote the show. It’s like a sketch comedy. It’s back to the ’70s when everyone had variety shows with a bit of a modern twist. There are TV shows like this Carol Barnett. I was obsessed with Carol Burnett as a young man, so my mother had ordered tapes from the TV, which was inspired by when we created the show.
A blend of live music, comedy and celebrity interviews with new shows. Where did all these ideas come from?
Well, the show has changed a bit. The interview is not like a straight-on interview. It’s a little different and doesn’t do too much. It’s like an integration of everything I’ve learned in the entertainment industry. Because you know, I started making music mostly, I started making music mostly, I started making movie soundtracks. So I felt like I was just thrown into it and I did a lot of theatres when I was 22. I was in Jeremy O’Harris’ play, the play was called No f. It feels like those experiences really shaped me. How do you see artistry now, and now I feel more in control of my story. I’m just trying to find a way to say things about society, wrap it up like a stupid goofy package and be myself.
What do you want people to take from the show?
I want people to know that everyone here is trying to do their best under an oppressive army. And I think a lot of comedies come from reality. I’ve noticed that some of my Instagram stories feel dark. The girl was actually dark, especially like I was in Los Angeles and downtown two days ago, it was scary. Just as four police officers were driving on the streets with sirens burning, they now seem to live under military takeovers in certain parts of the city. So when you make dystopian comedy, in my opinion, the reality we have is dystopians and I’m just trying to deal with it. I think it’s really a mess to have this kind of intense immigration process and try to capture people, to remind us of when police originally started as slave catchers. And it’s like it’s happening again. Round people, catch them, turn them, make them work.
Could you give us some tips on what celebrities might appear on the show?
Nothing has been confirmed. We’re holding it in a wrap. Because I have a friend that might tap, and that’s my journey with the stars.
