The awards ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel honored individuals and media projects who have made significant contributions to representing LGBTQ+ people in film, television, music and journalism. Cynthia Eribo was praised for the Stephen F. Colzak Award and rapper Douchee as an outstanding music artist, but it was Bush’s heartfelt humorous remarks that caught the audience’s attention.
Bush reflects on her journey and expression
During Ellis’ introduction, Bush took a light-hearted approach and joked about the experiences he came up with. “My membership card was mailed,” she pulled out her U-Haul card from inside the mushroom Calsett. The joke was soon enough that lesbian couples were committed, and for Bush, he nodded to how to break the ice before diving into the topic of more serious expression.

Bush went on to talk about the life-changing impact of seeing strange expressions in media that refer to Melissa Eterridge’s music, particularly. “Melissa Eterridge changed mine when she first sang “Come to My Window.” That was a big clue for me in 1993, and for my parents,” she said. The actress also shared a touching moment about her 2006 film John Tucker needs to diethere she shared a kiss with Brittany Snow. Bush revealed that many fans have reached out to her over the years, saying the scene is a crucial moment for the process in which she comes out.
“I’ve been very blessed to hear about my role from so many strange people. John Tucker needs to die Bush said.
The importance of expression and advocacy
Bush’s speech not only reflected her own experiences, but also was a call for action for the people in the room and the wider media landscape. She highlighted the importance of ensuring that LGBTQ+ individuals are not only seen on screen, but also heard and supported offscreen.
“Expression changes life,” Bush told the audience. “It’s not just a buzzword. It’s the reality that we need to continue fighting. The stories we tell shape the world around us, and for now, when marginalized communities are under attack, our voices are more important than ever.”
She also highlighted the importance of strange values as an important part of American values. “We need leaders to remind the world that our values, our strange values are American values,” Bush said.
