“996 people worked on this movie,” said director Wu. Gaity. “It really was 996 people dreaming it together that made this thing a reality.”
Wu said the theme of dreaming together comes from his own childhood. “When I was 6 or 7 years old and my parents almost split up, it was really hard for me, but I was really lucky. I had a younger brother, so we were able to go through all that uncertainty and all that turmoil together,” he said. “If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I would have coped as well as I did. That was kind of a turning point for this movie. The power of experiencing the unknown, the uncertainty of life, the chaos of life, the imperfections of life with someone else can make life really meaningful and worthwhile.”

Wu added that working with the cast was a great experience. “They sing a song in the movie. It’s an original song and both Sim and Christine are great singers,” he said. “While recording that, it felt like I was getting a free private concert from both of them. I can’t wait for the audience to hear their performance. It’s so heartfelt and so emotional.”
Simu Liu’s musical moments
If that’s not reason enough to see this movie, come watch Liu sing her heart out alongside the Emmy Award-winning actress. Cristin Milioti.
“I love being involved in my musical side,” Liu said. “It was such an honor to work with Kristin. She’s amazing. Even though we weren’t recording together, it felt like we were singing with Broadway royalty.”
Reflecting on his favorite part of recording, Liu added, “The day on set was one of the most enjoyable days for me. I just thought it was so beautiful and I got so emotional and so excited. So it’s really nice to go into the recording studio and lie down and put down a line or two.”

When asked what memories from his childhood keep him grounded, he said: “I was raised by my grandparents in China until I was 4 years old. I lost my grandparents due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2021. Recently, I have been dreaming about my grandparents a lot. It’s really wonderful to be able to visit my grandparents in my dreams.
