Sheila Van, a candidate for the special election for the DC Council on July 15, scored the highest score in the GLAA questionnaire, surpassing the other two challengers for former councillor Treyon White, who is trying to regain the seat he lost after it was announced in February.

White has been expelled from the office since his existence He was indicted He is said to have accepted thousands of dollars of bribes – accusations he denied and pleaded not guilty. Nevertheless, he is running again for his previous seat.

However, the GLAA does not evaluate candidates who have been banished or resigned for alleged ethical violations, such as “conflicts of interest, self-dealing, or misconduct.”

Another candidate for the race is Salim Adfo, a commissioner in the Advisory Nearby. Sheila Van, senior political strategist, former chief of staff for the mayor and 7th Ward Councilman Vincent Gray. Mike Austin, a lawyer and former ANC chair.

Each election cycle, GLAA (DC’s nonpartisan LGBTQ civic groups and the country’s oldest and most continuous active LGBTQ civic organization) will send a survey to local candidates asking about their positions on LGBTQ issues and policy that affect the LGBTQ community irregularly.

Candidates are rated on a scale of -10 to +10 and scored based on their consistency with GLAA location, depth of response, and advocacy records.

Bunn received a +7.5 rating. This is the best candidate. She was praised for her LGBTQ advocacy and public services. I worked for Gray. I worked for Gray. Gray had a strong Pro-LGBTQ record. They also praised the community’s efforts in marriage equality, transgender employment, insurance non-discrimination, and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

She was also praised for showing “the depth of ambiguity and motivation and motivation to navigate difficult decisions” especially when explaining how it affects a particular issue to the LGBTQ community. However, she opposed the GLAA on taxation and social work licensing and did not take a clear stance on sexual work, drug decriminalization, or social housing.

Austin has received a +6.5 rating, agrees with the GLAA on almost all issues, and has some uncertain attitudes about taxation and social housing. In an article in Austin’s response, the GLAA wrote that it “displays the relationship between the problem with the policy survey and its impact on the components of Room 8.”

Austin received a +6.5 rating and agreed to GLAA on most issues, but his position on taxation and social housing was somewhat unclear. The GLAA stated that it “indicating the involvement of the policy survey issues and its impact on the components of School 8.”

Although Austin lacked a personal record of LGBTQ advocacy, he showed strong knowledge of LGBTQ issues and provided detailed policy-driven answers. He was praised for explicitly referring to LGBTQ and marginalized communities and linking ANC chair experience with GLAA’s top priorities.

Adofo got a +4.5 rating from GLAA and agreed with the organisation on most issues, but hedged questions related to taxation, overdose centres, decriminalisation of sex work and social
housing. His response was thoughtful and showed deeper knowledge of some issues, but he failed to score points due to lack of details about the impact of certain policies on the LGBTQ community and the lack of personal records of Pro-LGBTQ advocacy.

Adofo received a +4.5 rating and agreed to GLAA on most issues, but hedged topics such as taxation, overdose centres, decriminalisation of sex work, and social housing. His response showed thoughtfulness and depth of some subjects, but he lost points because he failed to detail how certain policies affect LGBTQ people and because he lacked a personal record of Pro-LGBTQ advocacy.

“Adofo does not directly cite LGBTQ advocacy or specific actions in his responses. He does not mention the issue except for questions from the LGBTQ people or the Human Rights Office,” writes Glaa. “However, GLAA members have recognized their involvement as 8th Ward 8 community leaders over the years on issues critical to the health and well-being of the Ward 8 LGBTQ+ community.
