US Senator Reuben Gallego (D-Ariz.) is the latest well-known Democrat against transgender athletes competing in female-designated sports teams.
In an interview with a right-wing news outlet dispatchGallego reverberated to President Donald Trump and the host of Republican lawmakers who spoke out against transgender participation in women-designated sports.
“As a daughter’s parents, I think it’s legitimate that parents are concerned about their daughter’s safety, and I think it’s legal for us to worry about fair competition,” he said.
“There are some sports that some of these trance kids shouldn’t play,” Gallego added, but he said “local institutions” like the school board and athletic associations should be tasked with determining the year and “separation” based on biology.
Still, Gallego said the message to trans children who are forbidden from competing in teams that match their gender identity should be one of compassion.
“Hey, listen, we love you,” Gallego said. Give an example of how he addressed transgender youth. “We want you to be part of our community, but this is where you can’t play and find other activities for you to get involved. [in]. ”
Gallego’s comments came about an article examining the outlook of the Arizona Senator pursuing a presidential bid in 2028 and how he tried to cast himself as a practical and moderate voice within the Democrats compared to the reputation he cultivated in the House as a Liberal Fire brand.
Gallego’s comments make him the sixth prominent Democrat who directed public opinion on the issue of transgender sports participation.
According to a February poll from Pu Research CenterMost Americans prefer to require trans athletes to compete on a team that fits the sex they were assigned at birth.
Other Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Tom Suzzy (NY), Seth Moulton (Massachusetts), and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, have expressed concern about transgender inclusion in women-designated sports, which Newsom calls it “deeply unfair” to cisgender female athletes.
Two other Democrats, Texas officials Henry Cuertle and Vicente Gonazles, voted for Republicans earlier this year in support of a bill that would impose a full ban on transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Gallego also appeared to give away some ground on LGBTQ rights dispatch He “must look back” at the language of the Equality Act to ensure that the passage of equal non-discrimination bills does not prohibit sexual separation in educational institutions and athletic activities.
The bill would amend Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, but is opposed by conservatives who believe that its broad language will lead to the eradication of spaces of unity and teams.
