The first openly gay immigrant lawmaker in Congress has accused President Donald Trump of “inciting terror” with his administration’s continued ICE raids.
California Democrat Robert Garcia sent a strong message to the U.S. government this week, condemning the inhumane treatment of individuals detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Since President Trump took office in January, his administration has implemented several anti-immigrant policies, including beefing up federal agents and authorizing raids on immigrants in the United States.
After a field hearing earlier this week, Garcia shamed the Trump administration for “inciting terrorism not just in Los Angeles but across the country.”
Garcia continued: “We know that throughout this entire action planned by this administration, more than 170 American citizens have been detained without any due process. We know that hundreds of other immigrants, undocumented workers, and residents with permits to be here temporarily are also being detained.”
“We also know that our Constitution provides for due process for citizens and non-citizens alike.”
The president tried to send more than 4,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles earlier this year amid protests over raids on immigrants by ICE agents.
Since then, it has deployed troops to Washington, D.C., Memphis and Chicago. The administration is also considering sending troops to other U.S. cities.
Parliament heard from those detained during field hearings, with some alleging mistreatment, lack of due process and mistreatment.
Some said they were traumatized by being detained on their way to work, while others emotionally described their experiences in ICE detention centers.
Several immigrants, many of whom are LGBTQ+, claim they suffered abuse, sexual harassment, and medical neglect while in ICE custody.
Detainees in south Louisiana claim they were mistreated by ICE agents at the state’s ice production center (SLIPC) while in ICE custody.
