The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump Republican political action committee, has released an ad countering former President Donald Trump’s anti-transgender attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Trump campaign has leaned heavily into anti-transgender messaging in recent weeks, seeking to criticize Harris for being out of step with Americans on social issues.
Many of the ads attack Harris over her support for gender-affirming care for incarcerated people, a position she took while running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2019.
“Kamala is for them/them,” a narrator says in one of the ads. “President Trump is on your side.”
In a new ad, the Trump campaign focuses on Shiloh Heavenly Quine, one of the transgender inmates in California custody. Shiloh Heavenly Quine was the first inmate in the United States to undergo state-funded gender reassignment surgery.
The ad misidentifies Ms. Quine as a man and suggests that she received the surgery as compensation after “murdering the father of her three children.”
As Harris previously pointed out in a television interview when she was attacked by Fox spokesperson Bret Baier, the Trump administration itself has also said that transgender inmates should be considered “medically necessary.” , had adopted a similar policy of allowing transgender prisoners to receive gender-affirming care.
Harris added that as president, she would “follow the law” and allow these policies to continue.
The Lincoln Project has now cut a new ad defending Harris and criticizing Trump’s hypocrisy.
“Have you seen this ad?” a narrator chimes in as a brief snapshot of Trump’s attack on Harris is shown. “Donald Trump is spending millions of dollars attacking Kamala Harris based on desperate lies.”
The ad features a headline proving that the Trump administration has allowed inmates to receive gender-affirming medical care.
“Taxpayer-funded gender reassignment of prisoners and illegal aliens is a Trump administration policy,” the narrator says. “He’s attacking Kamala Harris for her record and thinks you’re too stupid to understand.
“He’s gaslighting America because Trump is on his/his side. Kamala is for us.”
The counter-ads come as Republicans across the country see transgender issues such as transgender sports participation and gender-affirming care as wedge issues, driving social conservatives to vote. He believes that encouraging attendance will help Republican candidates. Endorsing candidates, including Trump.
Harris’ record on transgender medical care during her time as California attorney general is actually controversial. She initially defended the state against a lawsuit brought by Quine, the inmate featured in President Trump’s ad, seeking transfer to a women’s facility and access to medical care, including gender reassignment surgery.
ultimately the state resolved A lawsuit was filed in 2015, paving the way for Quine’s surgery, but only after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a lower court judge’s ruling. in another case Second trans prisoner’s lawsuit seeking gender-affirming care dismissed. In this case, the Court of Appeals found that inmate Mia Rosati made a plausible argument that her Eighth Amendment rights were violated when she was denied sex reassignment surgery.
Four years later, the Ninth Circuit finally ruled that the State of Idaho had refused gender reassignment treatment for a third inmate, Adley Edmo, on the grounds that the denial of surgical treatment was indeed a violation of the Eighth Circuit in Edmo. The court ruled in the affirmative that the costs should be borne by the defendant. Right to rectification. Idaho appealed this decision to the Supreme Court, which affirmed the Ninth Circuit’s decision.
Earlier this year, the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (this time the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals) ruled that insurance exclusions denying coverage for gender reassignment treatment are unconstitutional and that such care must be included in state-funded insurance plans. It was decided that there was.
