Jackson Vogel, 24, is charged with first-degree intentional murder, a hate crime and a repeat offender penalty enhancement, for the Aug. 27 killing of Micah Laureano, 19, at the Green Bay Correctional Facility. The Associated Press reported.
According to the indictment in the case, a guard was making his rounds at the state prison around 9:30 p.m. when he noticed paper blocking out the cell Vogel and Laureano shared. At the guard’s command, Vogel removed the paper and discovered Laureano’s body, bound at the hands and feet, hanging from the top bunk.
According to the Associated Press, prosecutors allege that Vogel confessed to the crime and killed Laureano because he was bored and his new cellmate “checked all the boxes” – he was black and gay. Vogel said he beat Laureano unconscious, tied his hands and feet, and strangled him to death.
Vogel also reportedly told authorities he often thought about killing people and that strangling Laureano gave him a feeling of “ecstasy.” Investigators also found a note written by Vogel containing racist and anti-gay slogans, including “Kill all humans,” the news agency reported.
Vogel was arrested and incarcerated for stabbing, strangling and attempting to break the neck of his mother when he was 16. He was convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison, but that sentence was recently upheld on appeal.
