Experts are warning that they are considering extending the ban on adolescent bans to cover prescriptions of private hormones.
Clinical Psychologist and Director Gender PlusDr. Aidan Kelly warned that bans on prescribing private hormones could have “harmful” effects on all generations of trans youth.
The government is reportedly considering expanding the ban on adolescent blockers to block access to private prescriptions of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in accordance with testimony heard by the High Court on Thursday (May 22).
A lawyer representing the Ministry of Health said an expert panel has been created to analyze the use and effectiveness of Trans People’s HRT, which is due to be published in July.
Prescriptions of physically reversible adolescent blockers, considered by some major healthcare providers, are currently prohibited in the UK from being called an “unacceptable safety risk.” The only way to access them is through clinical trials commissioned to the NHS.
Speaking to Pinknake, Dr. Aidan Kelly says the lack of transparency in the creation of the panel has sparked concerns that it turns into a “kangaroo court” that ignores expert guidance in favor of “predetermined” outcomes.
“The fact that there is a review going on is not a surprise,” he says. “I think what’s even more concerning is the fact that we have a working group of experts who are already working on this together.”
Private transclining did not consult about the expert panel, Dr. Kelly says
The announcement that a working group has already been created came as a shock to Dr. Kelly and staff at GenderPlus, a private transhealthcare and education service in the UK.
He says neither the NHS England nor the government had contacted the British Gender Identity Specialist (BAGIS) Gender Plus or Private Transhealth Care Services for the planned consultations despite it having a direct impact.
“We didn’t realize that this obvious group of experts was being formed with this obvious meeting of experts,” he says. “We ask the question of who these experts are and what their expertise is.
“These people may have great, professional sound titles, but you may find them very lacking when it comes to the substance of expertise in the field of transhealthcare.”

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has indefinitely extended the ban on adolescent blockers in 2024, and has constituted more than 32 recommendations for restructuring UK trans youth care after the publication of the controversial CASS review.
In April, Streeting claimed that he was “really sorry” about the “fear and anxiety” that the ban caused. A few weeks ago, Labor believes that trans women should have the “humility” that says that trans women are not women and trans men are not men.
Now Dr. Kelly says that Bagis officials prioritize trying to understand “what’s going on” in a panel of experts review, adding that the lack of knowledge about the meaning is “really concerning.”
“I’m worried that I don’t know anything about different things. [Non-government organisations (NGOs)] It exists to support trans young people. It asks for questions, well, are they consulted with the process or are they involved at all? ”
GenderPlus regularly works with 16- and 17-year-olds looking to access UK healthcare through personal prescriptions and expert advice. Dr. Kelly, who is at the forefront of organizational work, says that the possibility of a private HRT ban for trans under the age of 18 could have serious implications for their well-being.
Several patients have already begun contacting gender in fear of stopping treatment, as Dr. Kelly states:
Trans-use relying on a “DIY” way of accessing HRT
The result of shutting down these pathways could be a “lost generation” of young people who are forced to access hormones via DIY HRT, he says.
“[Trans youth resorting to DIY] It’s something we’re seeing more and more recently, and certainly in GenderPlus we didn’t see under the age of 18. In the last six to nine months, we’ve seen it a lot more. ”
Dr. Kelly says there is a mixture of adolescent blockers refusing to listen to transhealth care professionals, claiming the myth that it is “too risky.”

“I think they’re fully aware of what the outcome will be. [with the private hormones ban]but I don’t think it’s high on their priority list,” he says. They never follow their logic and say what is risky [puberty blockers] It may be getting worse.
“I think if they contact us, they know they don’t want the answer we give them. [Gender Plus and BAGIS] I’m an expert. ”
Dr. Kelly urged the government to contact private health groups and clinical experts to find out how impactful hormonal treatments could have, adding that GenderPlus, who saw the UK referrals for 287 under 18 trans in 2024 alone, has data to prove that it can “change life.”
“Of course, there are young people who may not be right, but the majority can lead an incredibly, incredibly kind, otherwise normal, fulfilling, happy life. I have been a young person who has made progress over the past decade, is a normal young person and lives their lives.
“[Trans healthcare] It’s not ruining life. Life has not been ruined. Life has been extremely helpful, but unfortunately there is one or two stories that continue to move around and be told as if to represent the entire community. ”
