It was an honor to be a free guest at Weho Pride’s Autoloud Music Festival. It was a beautiful weekend celebrating LGBTQ+ people and amplifying queer artists and allies.Over the weekend, I witnessed performances by Lizzo, Remi Wolf, Kim Petras, Honey Dijon, Paris Hilton, and many other music artists and performers.Everyone fell into great spirits, and “What pride does to them mean?” And their response was inspiring, sincerely and necessary. This is what people had to say:1.
“I have the comfort of being myself. Unfortunately, many families and people are unable to express themselves. It allows them to express themselves and hopefully build lifelong friendships and get out of the shells and stigmas that currently exist in the queer community.”2.
“Pride is a protest. It means releasing our rights, which means including trans rights. It means having as much sex as possible, and at the same time, we can release our rights at the same time.”3.
“Pride means you are the person you need in this lifetime to make it. And I feel like most people don’t do it. Exactly who you are. Don’t fit the mold. Find someone who accepts who you are.”4.
“Pride is not just about love, joy and celebration of life, but also about commitment to those who came before us. Queer people have always been here, but there are many ugly parts of the past where queer identities were systematically erased. People who did so in the past and fought to make our rights exist and look like the world.”5.
“It’s a celebration of acceptance and you’re just living a real life. There are many people who don’t lead a real life.6.
“Pride is a memory of the Stonewall riots. It’s a celebration of a community that presents a safe space and reminds everyone who is loved. It’s a message that the LGBTQ+ community is always here and always here.”7.
“Pride means being completely free to know what identity and orientation you are and celebrating your queer culture with your community and others.”8.
“Pride means celebrating the anniversary of the powerful and fearless pioneer of the community who rose to be right in 1969, and celebrating the fight that has continued ever since.”9.
“Pride means community and it reminds us that even when the world throws it at us, we are still here and we will remain here no matter what.”10.
“For me, pride is a good time to look back at people who have come before. To give Benefits and opportunities . Also, when I want to check in my development and my journey as a gay person, and when I like to check in to see if I’m proud of the person, it’s time for me and for me. As the year progressed, the answer became more and more yes. ”12.
“Take ownership of who I am without the shame or guilt of heteronorms!”13.
“For me, pride means allowing yourself to love. It’s not the season, it’s an emotion.”14.
“Pride means not being embarrassed about who you are and always being true to yourself (I guess, ha ha).”15.
“We celebrate how far we have come and how far we have to go.”16.
“Pride is that I can be enthusiastic and accepted at the same time without worrying about my fit.”17.
“No matter what, I’m proud of who you are.”18.
Finally, “My existence has been verified.”19.
