The California Democratic Party is moving quickly to remove U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell from the gubernatorial race after a former staffer accused him of sexual assault, and two of the state’s most prominent Democratic voices are now publicly suggesting his campaign may be over.
Speaker of the House Emeritus Nancy Pelosi said in a statement Friday through Press Secretary Ian Crager that the women who accused Mr. Swalwell “must be respected and heard,” and that the allegations require “full transparency and accountability,” adding that after speaking with Mr. Swalwell, “it is clear that this is best done outside of the gubernatorial race.”

“There is no place in our country or in our Democratic Party for those who abuse women and girls,” the gay California Democrat wrote in X on Friday. “I stand with the courageous survivor who shared her story. Congresswoman Swalwell must withdraw from the gubernatorial race immediately.”
first suspicion reported The San Francisco Chronicle cited a former staffer who worked for Swalwell from 2019 to 2021 after joining the company at age 21 and said their relationship turned sexual while Swalwell was his boss. She claims that after drinking with Swalwell in 2019, she passed out and woke up naked in a hotel bed, believing that Swalwell had sex with her while she was unable to consent. She also claimed that she was assaulted a second time after a charity gala in 2024, again saying she was too drunk to consent and remembered telling him no.
Mr. Swalwell denied the claims, calling them false and politically motivated.
