Be prepared to be disappointed. The first trailer for The history of sound It is officially dropped, giving it a gloomy gaze, folk melody and strange longing with sepia tones.

A queer era piece with musical roots
It was adapted from a short story by Benshattuck of the same name, The history of sound Beginning at the Boston Conservatory in 1917, Lionel (Mezcal), a talented young music student, meets fellow singer David (O’Connor). The two connect with each other’s passion for folk music, sharing their voices and gazes equally. But as quickly as their bonds begin to deepen, life intervenes, and David sets out to serve World War I.
A few years later, the pair reunited and traveled through Maine’s forests and coastlines to collect and preserve traditional American folk songs. Their expeditions provide the backdrop of quiet and powerful romance that deeply shape both their lives.

Strange love, no comparison
What’s refreshing The history of sound The decision is to take a gentle approach to that central romance. There is no free intimacy or trauma porn here. Instead, the emotional accusations of the film come from a gentle exchange between two men navigating affection, relationships and shared artistry.
Speaking at Cannes, Mezcal said. indiewire“I feel that’s a little different about this. [other] Romantic relationships on the screen… physical touch is not a priority. It’s intellectual stimulation and friendship. ”
That doesn’t mean there’s a lack of chemistry. In fact, early reviews from the film’s Cannes premiere praised the subtlety and restraint of the performance.
Favorite award season for making
After his hotly talked about debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, The history of sound It has already been turned over as something to see in upcoming Oscar races. Mubi will release the film in theaters starting September 12th.
Neither Mescal and O’Connor are strangers of critical acclaim. Here they are fully cast and can easily turn to melodrama, but bring depth, pain and nuance to the story that they can never do.
The first love with folk songs
The film’s stimulating environment, wiping out the film’s filming and unforgettable musical moments only deepen emotional resonance. As Lionel and David collect forgotten songs on the corner of the American countryside, they also maintain memories of something more vulnerable: fleeting and precious love.
