Netflix has added another compelling entry to its library of growing true crime content with its new docusaries Amy Bradley is missing. Bradley disappeared on March 24, 1998 in a confused situation. Rhapsody of the Sea. The ship departed from Puerto Rico and was on its way to Curacao on the Caribbean Island of the Netherlands when Amy was last seen. What was meant to be a festive family holiday turned into a search for the miserable life of answers.
Disappearance at the sea
Early in the morning, Amy’s father, Ron Bradley, noticed her daughter was sleeping in a lounge chair on the cabin balcony. Within an hour she was gone. The ship was still in the sea, preparing to dock into Curacao. When Amy was nowhere found, her family immediately warned the sailors, causing a search of the ship and surrounding seas.
Despite efforts by local law enforcement agencies, including the cruise crew and the Port Police in Curacao, no traces of Amy were found. Mentor Adtzere “John” who was then the Port Police Chief, was one of the chief investigators. Frankly on the Netflix series, Mentar says, “If she gets off the boat or falls off the boat, if we get the body, I’m telling you,” he says in an interview. “She would have washed track and field.”
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation quickly joined the case and pursued multiple theories. Has Amy fallen overboard? Has she been accused? Or did she voluntarily leave the ship, but only to endanger later? Over the years, these questions remained unanswered despite reporting several leads and report sightings in the Caribbean.
A strange woman at risk
Much of the media attention at the time focused on Amy’s athleticism, independence and strong bonds with her family.
