Mrs. Mary Crawley is out in style. Downton Abbey: Grand FinaleThe return of the film of a global phenomenon sees the Crawley family and their staff navigating the 1930s. As Mary lands at the heart of a public scandal and her family faces financial ruin, the whole family must gather to protect their heritage and embrace the new era. But in the process, Mary not only secures her own place in history, but also pins her position as a strange icon.
Michelle Dockery, who has embodied Mrs. Mary since 2010, could not agree any more. “Yeah, well, she’s a gay icon, right? And I love it. In this film, all those characters are invited to the house,” she tells Gayty.
“They” is nothing more than Mary’s former butler Thomas Barrow, his film star Bo Guy Dexter, and playwright legend Noel Coward.
Mary and Barrow: The unlikely duo
We’ve seen Mary and Barrow. Downton Films develop friendships over the years. Dockery said that Mary always sympathizes with his struggle.
“She’s watching something in Barrow really early on. I love those relationships in the series. She can see how much he is resisting and has to change who he is for the times and society,” she explained.
“And that’s a big decision that he’ll end up in this relationship where Guy Dexter and Mary are excited about him.”
Their friendship has always been one of the show’s most layered ones, and I love how Dockery reaches its peak here.

Happy ending
Dockery imagines a great future for Mary when the credits roll. “Do you think she’s going to the library after the film is over and writing some letters to Noel Coward and Guy Dexter and going out to party this weekend? I think the new generation will be a more party for them.”
Those who knew that divorce would cause such a scandal
The conflict is always tall, even in her own difficulties, which are primarily shunned by society, as she has been divorced. Dockery said, “I was really shocked at how she was treated and how women were shunned from society. As a modern woman, I couldn’t believe it. Who cares?”
Downton Abbey It may be over, but Mrs. Mary’s reign as a gay icon has just begun. Plus, a gay happy ending? What more can I ask for?
