The queer stories we all need

In a refreshing twist, this coming-of-age film includes a fantastic queer storyline, which Megan Park spoke about: “When I came up with the idea for this story… When Elliot came to me, in my mind, it was always going to be Elliot,” Park said. She wanted to create a character who was confident in his identity, but also open to exploring it. “I hadn’t seen that before, and I thought it was interesting,” Park said.

September is Bisexual Awareness Month, so this story couldn’t have come at a better time. Maisie Stella, playing a leading role for the first time, was excited about the challenge. “It felt so authentic and honest,” she says. “I’ve always really loved seeing characters go through any kind of self-exploration or turmoil.”

Bieber fever continues

It’s impossible to have a nostalgic teen movie without a Justin Bieber reference, and Stella insisted on a scene from “One Less Lonely Girl” because the song played such a big role in her own childhood. “When I watch the video, I get so jealous and angry when I see One Less Lonely Girl featured,” she laughed.

This dynamic duo puts their own unique twist on the concert phenomenon — check it out for yourself.

Megan Park, while obviously not of the Bieber generation, trusted Stella’s judgement: “I was like, ‘No, no, no. Hold on. People are going to understand.'”
