Married at First Sight (MAFS) Australia Star Julia Fogle revealed that she felt her “sexuality was diminished” on the show and slammed biphobia.
Fogle, who made history as the show’s first openly bisexual bride, opened up about her sexuality on the show and said she would be happy to marry either a man or a woman.
In a voiceover I heard on the way to the wedding, she said: “The idea that my potential husband or wife is out there and I don’t know them is a very strange idea. I’m looking for a cosmic connection.
“I don’t know if I’ll match with a man or a woman. It’s not about someone’s gender…What matters is the connection I have with them. That connection transcends gender for me.”
She was paired up with Queensland-based entrepreneur Grayson McIver, who has been open about her bisexuality. But sadly, her being open about her sexuality has sparked some anti-bisexual comments.
In an interview with refinery29 australia She admitted she was tired of being “reduced to my sexuality.”
“It’s frustrating to always be reduced to my sexuality, because there’s so much more to me than just my sexuality. In fact, the fact that I’m bisexual is probably the most boring thing about me.”
“This is completely my entire story [and] There are so many assumptions being made in my depiction. ”
Bisexual people often experience Erasure, prejudice, and outright ignorance in their daily life.
Biphobia, which can include comments about how bi people have to “pick a side” or deny their “true” sexuality, was present in the show, and a storyline emerged that implied that Fogle was not interested in men.
Regarding Grayson’s suggestion that he “want a woman,” she said, “Suggesting that because I wasn’t interested in this man, he must be a lesbian feels like a cop-out and really harmful. Bisexuals often feel misunderstood and ununderstood, and this is a perfect example of that.”
In 2023, Married At First Sight UK saw Ella Morgan become the show’s first transgender bride. The following year saw the second lesbian couple in history.
