“I didn’t realize it was something. I didn’t do anything, so I think there’s a real stigma behind it,” he shared.
“You feel like you’re involved. It would have had to literally break it down for me, like in my twenties, until I was a therapist. [They said] “You’re in your 20s. This person was in his 20s. Is there anything you can do at 11 years old?” I’m right, no. no. But that was a difficult part to talk about. ”

“I left my body,” he continued. “I felt I was happy to be a participant.”
Gage explained that he had not told his mother about the experience until he read a copy of his memoir to her.
“I sit down with her and say, ‘Look, I hate talking about this. I hate talking to you. We shouldn’t be embarrassed about it, so I hate being embarrassed about it. I just want to warn you. ‘It was hard for her to read.’

In his candid chat with Hirsch, he acknowledged that humor was always his “favourite defense mechanism,” so he wrote a bit of a comical edge about his camp experience.
“I’ll laugh about the darkest things in my life, then talk about the most common details (and) I’m very serious about talking about getting coffee that nothing dramatic happens,” he said.

“When I talk about abuse, I feel like we are. [are expected] When we talk about it, it’s small things. For me it was the way I could regain my strength and use a bit of humility to acquire the story of that story, which would make me feel weak, small and embarrassing. Humor, I feel the strength leaning on it. ”
As for how he is dealing with it now, Gage agreed to “deal with it” through his treatment and being open with his loved ones. Now he says, “I don’t feel like the strange freak that happened. It’s not this weight.”
