With all the fun and half the hassle, there’s a lot to do with Staycation and the performing arts can be a big part of your experience. Here are some of the things that are out there this summer.
At Wolftrap, summer programs are bursting with singing, dancing and laughter. And if you’re fast, you can catch gay humorist David Sedaris’ Sardonic Witt on his one night show “A Night with David Sedaris” July 19th.
Pink Martini On July 29th, Wolftrap will host a 30th anniversary tour. The self-proclaimed “little orchestra,” known for its cosmopolitan musical styling, features vocalists China Forbes and Storm Radio special guest-out radio journalist Alisha Piro.
Other shows scheduled for Vienna, Virginia, Farm Park includes Broadway stars Sutton Foster and Kelly O’Hara accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra for Showstoppers night by Rogers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, Cole Porter, Jason Robert Brown and Joni Mitchell. (8/1) wolftrap.org
Studio Theater is perfect for summer “wipe out” (Until July 27th). The beach set story of playwright Aurora Real Deathaa seems promising with 110-minute humor and heart-pounding moments.
In “Wipeout,” Claudia, played by DC’s favorite Naomi Jacobson, treats herself and her two closest girlfriends as early birthday presents in a surf lesson.
Coached by “Surf Bro” instructor Blaze (played by handsome actor Alec Ludacka), Claudia is determined to slip into a golden age “to grab some waves and calm some scores.”
The Olney Theatre presents a fantastic, oddly friendly summer programme, mainly focusing on the outdoor route family stage (7/31-8/24).
Highlights include hilarious actors/singers Titus Burgess A concert on August 7th and presentations of the US premier concert for “To Wong Foo: The Musical” (8/21) and “Just Arts: From Stonewall to Rupaul Drag Extavaganza” (8/24) Lala RI and Latris Royale.
For those who want to beat the heat indoors, Olney has a synetic theatre that plays that wordless version “Midsummer Night’s Dream” Until August 10th.
A take on the seductive Athens Set ROM Com, filled with fairies, fantastic forests, lovers crossed by stars, and actors transformed into donkeys, St. Bard’s seductive Athens Set ROM Com is directed by Paata tsikurishvili. olneytheatre.org
If a child (ages 4 and above) appears in your stay plan, a trip to the Bethesda stage of imagination might just be a ticket. “Dory Fantasmagory” (Until August 3) Based on Abby Hanlon’s children’s book, we adapt to John Grore’s stage and explore family dynamics while maintaining both imagination and fun.
“It’s difficult to be the youngest. Dolly’s brother doesn’t play with her, and there are monsters fighting throughout the house, like Mrs. Gobble Glacker, who lifts her hair.
Young theatre participants are encouraged to wear quirky outfits in the spirit of Dolly’s playful style, and Saturdays in pajamas are also encouraged. Imaginationstage.org
Young audiences may enjoy it too “Thunder Thief” (Until August 17th) The Adventure Theater in Glen Echo Park has been announced. With music and lyrics by Rob Rokicki, this dynamic musical adaptation of Rick Riordan’s bestselling book opened on Broadway in 2019.
This is the key point of the story. “When teenager Percy Jackson discovers he is a demigod, he and his friends lose Zeus’ lightning bolt and head out on an epic journey to prevent war among the gods,” directed by Kurt Boehm. Adventuretheatre-mtc.org
Signature Theater has a relaxing cabaret “Sailing: Yachtlock” (July 22 – August 10) Featuring the incredibly talented Deimoni Brewington and Tracy Lynn Olivera.
Relax and remember with chilly songs like “Brandy (You’re a great girl),” “Escape (Pena Colada Song)” and “The Fool Believes.” This is your chance to enjoy and revisit the sounds of Christopher Cross, Toto and the Deby Brothers. sigtheatre.org
Washington National Opera (WNO) Presentations Outfield Opera (August 23rd). WNO will invite theaters and baseball fans to Nationals Park to broadcast Gershwin’s gorgeous classic, “Porgy and Bess,” for free. Screening begins at 6:30pm
Summer stay ends at Kennedy Center “parade” (August 19th – September 7th) is a powerful and celebrated Broadway Revival musical of 2023. It is based on the true story of Leo Frank, a Jewish factory manager in Atlanta, who was falsely accused and convicted of the murder of 13-year-old Mary Fagan in 1913. Kennedy-center.org
