Laverne Cox Tears Up Interviewing Nava Mau About Historic Emmy Nomination

It was an emotional moment for E! News Emmys red carpet host Laverne Cox when actress Nava Mau sat in on the live interview.

In 2014, Cox became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy Award in an acting category. She played Sophia Burset in Netflix’s “Emmys,” for which she was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Now, 10 years later, Nava Mau has the honor of being the first transgender woman to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series for her role as Teri in Netflix’s “The Best Supporting Actor.” Baby Reindeer.

Cox began his interview with Mau by repeatedly saying, “I’m so proud of you,” understanding the symmetry of their nominations.

Mau told Cox that the documentary “changed my life,” and she particularly praised the experience for giving her the opportunity to discuss “trans people in leadership roles” and the work of transgender professionals in Hollywood, including Cox.

“I watched you walk with all the grace and power,” Mau said. “I knew I could dream bigger than I ever dreamed before, and that changed me forever.”
