A Los Angeles community center for transgender and non-binary people has opened its first health care clinic offering a variety of services to local residents.
The Connie Norman Transgender Empowerment Center (CONOTEC), California’s safe haven for transgender people, held a ribbon cutting for the newly opened Connie Norman Transgender Healthcare Clinic on Saturday, March 14th.
The new service, located on the second floor of the CONOTEC building, aims to provide a variety of services, including HIV testing and STD testing, to community members across LA.
According to reports, organizers will work with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and transgender-led advocacy group FLUX to run the clinic, which organizers say is “a safe and welcoming facility that is open to all.”
An AHF spokesperson said: “The significant addition of a clinic to Conotec will be key for local residents as it will enable them to access services provided in their neighbourhood.”
This comes as the Trump administration continues to attack gender-affirming care for transgender youth that is still legally provided in states across the country.
Last June, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), an L.A. pediatrician who had treated more than 3,000 transgender youth, discontinued its gender-affirming care program in what organizers called a “painful and significant” setback for transgender rights.
Emails shared at the time madicast news Officials cited “legal and financial risks” stemming from what officials called “changing policy landscapes at both the state and federal levels.”
Several hospitals in blue states filed similar lawsuits after the Justice Department allegedly subpoenaed more than 20 doctors and medical facilities that provided gender-affirming treatment.
Earlier this month, a separate U.S. appeals court ruled that West Virginia could implement a ban on gender reassignment surgery for trans adults, arguing that U.S. states have a duty to “encourage their citizens to appreciate their sexuality.”
Although Conotec has not yet disclosed whether the clinic will support access to gender-affirming care, its creation is a step forward and will allow TransCalifornians to access critical services without fear of discrimination.
Following a wave of transphobic actions by the government, several genocide scholars have claimed that the country is in the early stages of “mass brutality” against its people.
A Department of Health (HHS) report released last May recommended the use of “exploratory treatment” for transgender youth instead of potentially life-saving gender-affirming care, leading to concerns that the administration would implement federally funded conversion therapy.
