Not as bad as its studio cousin morbiusStill, somehow it’s not good, kraven the hunter Bringing an ignominious end to the Sony Spider-Man spin-off universe. The so-called SSU, a series of films featuring legendary villains and supporting characters from Marvel’s Spider-Man comics, but without Spider-Man himself, will be released in 2024 to great success with three films. madame weblazy Venom: The Last Danceand finally, Craven — all agree on an uncanny sense of how completely in control this cinematic world is by its creators.
It was actually reported the day before. CravenIn the release of , it was announced that this would be the last spin-off of SSU. However, the film was directed by JC Chander (most violent year), could still have been a candidate in its own right.
Kraven, a savage hunter in acrobatic tights and a pectoral-baring vest, may not have the name and facial recognition of Green Goblin or Doctor Octopus, but he’s ideal for an action movie adventure . Blessed with superhuman strength, speed, agility, and an ego, and prone to operating in exotic and picturesque locations where he communicates with wild animals, he is a Spidey who can thrive on his own in the right environment. is the enemy of
To their credit, the filmmakers have no idea what the setting will be like, and how Craven (real name: Sergei Kravinoff) will be the story of a violent gangster in the international criminal underworld. It seems like he understood what kind of action movie he wanted to make. It could be a potential fertile ground for a take-no-prisoners antihero played by gun-wielding Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
former kick ass The star wears this sassy cartoon character well, but his performances generally consist of him posing, snarling, facing or away from the camera, like a catwalk model. Just do it. Taylor-Johnson conveys Craven’s extraordinary self-esteem, but there’s no real depth to it, just reading the lines.
There are also brutal punches, knives, and gunfire. The actor meets the physical demands of the role, as Craven bleeds flagrantly in skirmishes with poachers and gangsters. What’s unbearable are the action scenes themselves, which often lack setup or suspense and just end up with random cuts to different locations.
A booby trap-like sequence was inserted into the film. home alone Supercuts come and go, with no clue as to when or how Craven devised these nifty traps. That’s a lost opportunity. The Foreigner (Christopher Abbott), the ostensible villain, wanders into the film and shows off his incredible ability to travel through time, space, and more. It’s never explained what exactly his powers are, nor does he indicate any plan or purpose going into this fight.
He makes a dramatic, super-powered entrance in one scene, trotting past a roomful of henchmen to sit down triumphantly without saying a word. The film then switches to another, very momentum-killing development.
Chander and company may have understood the concept, but the plot, pacing, characterization, and dialogue slipped from their grasp, resulting in an amorphous origin journey out of nowhere. Oscar-winning actress Ariana DeBose is also caught up in the vortex, playing Calypso, another Spider-Man-related villain, though she’s not the villain here.
She is an intrepid lawyer with an interest in herbs and potions, a talent inherited from her grandmother, who was a mystic. In the comics, Craven and Calypso are lovers, but there’s no such chemistry between Taylor-Johnson and DeBose, who is bothered by Charlein here.moonstruck wig, and at least one awful dubbing scene where her lines don’t match the action.
Calypso also includes an origin story that is briefly mashed up with Craven’s superhuman origins in northern Ghana. There we meet his gangster father, Nikolai, played by Russell Crowe, another Oscar winner, the source of his despicable personality, but he only plays one note. Nikolai hates weakness.
He has two sons, Sergei and Dmitri, and does not want them to become weak. “Never show weakness.” “Your mother was weak.” “Your brother is weak.” He punches his sons mercilessly with his eyebrows, until Sergei/Kraven becomes a brutal vigilante who hunts people, while the other, Dmitri (Fred Hechinger), develops his own amazing chameleon-like abilities and a new identity that is repeatedly teased.
But a cinematic future is not promised. and kraven the hunterwas too busy introducing characters and IPs to build a plot, and didn’t seem to get the memo that all these characters showed up to the party, and was over before they even got there.
