Director Maggie Kang even likened Rumi’s story to “coming out of the closet,” highlighting the film’s intentional parallels with experiences of self-discovery and acceptance. This story, combined with themes of chosen family, community, and self-love, is especially poignant for viewers who have ever felt the need to hide parts of themselves, making the film more than just a thrilling fantasy, but an empowering message about embracing your true identity.

According to the filmmakers, the sequel will push the characters into new territory.
“These characters are like family to us, and their world has become our second home,” Appelhans said. “We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve as we continue to push the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together.”
