Two years after she first appeared on her Trans Awareness Week show, singer-songwriter and longtime LGBTQ+ ally Kelly Clarkson sat down with transgender teen Harley Walker.

Now, Hurley is 18 years old, a high school graduate, and a freshman at the University of Maryland.
Clarkson virtually dialed in and asked Hurley what he would like to share with viewers.
“What I really want to share is that transgender people are often maligned and demonized by politicians and the media in general. We are human beings,” Hurley began.
“Like I said, I’m just a normal young woman. I’m having fun with my friends. I’m very busy with classes. I’m going to a football game and a basketball game.”
“I’m a lively young woman.”
Hurley also said, “I’m trans, but that’s not my entire life. But that doesn’t mean I’m not proud of being trans.”
“I just want people to know that I’m a vibrant young woman, and I think that’s hard to understand.”
While Hurley’s message is a positive one, sadly the situation for transgender people in the United States has not improved since she first appeared on the show.
Under President Donald Trump’s administration, presidential order As part of his broader campaign against so-called “woke” initiatives, a petition was signed to end government-backed diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs.
In the months that followed, several government departments and agencies capitulated to President Trump’s demands. This includes firing employees who work in DEI roles and removing countless web pages, reports, and references vaguely associated with the LGBTQ+ community and other minority groups.
This includes the painting of a mural with the FBI listing “diversity” as a core value, and the removal of transgender and non-binary people from Stonewall National Monument’s webpage.
Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis appears to have removed the “T” in LGBT+ from its report on threats to queer communities during Pride Month.
