Being free from your beloved group is not a small feat. Some of the artists who will become the next Justin Timberlake or Harry style will fade into ambiguity. Former Little Mix member Jade claims pop advantage in her first solo album. It’s a showbiz baby!and her opening statement is loud, messy and exhilarating.
Her debut single, “Angel of My Dreams,” shows that this is not a careful rebranding. Jade calls her style “Frankenstein Pop,” and the tracks endure the label: from the cheeky lift of the Sandy Show’s 1967 Eurovision winner to the cheeky lift of “string doll” to the beat of the bass heavy club, and shouting to her producer Mike Sabbath. The result is a chaotic national anthem, both self-aware and honest spectacle.
17 years after she was told she wasn’t strong enough as a solo act X FactorJade is currently on centre stage in one of the boldest pop debuts of the decade.
Riding the biggest wave of pop
Jade’s timing never improved. After years of whispering and diary pop dominates the charts, the pendulum swings towards the theatrical excess. Summer 2024 marked a turning point: Charli XCX’s Blade Setting the tone, Sabrina Carpenter created a cheeky name for herself, and Chapel Lawn enveloped her path in the mainstream. Jade slips into this revival in “My Dream Angel” and arrives now in a complete project that leans into camp, charm, and bold experimentation.
Pop experiment playground
It’s a showbiz baby! It feels like a scrapbook of ideas Jade couldn’t unleash during the Little Mix. Songs like “It Girl” and “Headache” flirt with an electro-crash, nods early on Mia and Santigold, and “Midnight Cowboy” leaning against the cameo and decadent and suggestive camp of actor Ncuti Gatwa.
The album’s disco-inspired middle stretch, “fantasy,” “unconditional,” and “self-saboter” prove that retro sounds can be rethinked without sounding like a tribute act. Where other disco revivals feel like karaoke, Jade brings sweaty, unpredictable energy. Elsewhere, she stretches her voice across a bit of rap with ballads, hyperpop and even “glitch.”
A top-class woman appears
It’s a showbiz baby! It’s not just a solo debut, it’s a fill-in for pop artists. Jade is proof that she embraces spectacle and risk in ways she couldn’t do within the group, and has the chops and personality of the headline voice of her time.
After sharing the stage for years, Jade reveals that she’s not here to blend in. She’s here to do the show.
