The iconic LGBTQ+ pop culture that shaped generations

Let’s be real. Most of us didn’t learn about the weirdness from school. We learned that from the sparkly pop star, films that sneak into the gay subplot, and YouTube interviews that made people feel like they’ve seen it. Below is a list of moments that actually taught the world what it means to be strange, confident and non-apology.

1. when Schitt’s Creek It gave me a strange relationship without a trauma plot line.

2. In that loud album era when Rihanna said, “Who’s going to stop me?”, we believed in her.

3. When Lady Gaga said, “It was born like this,” we played it on a loop on Nokia Xpressmusic.

4. Sushant Divgikar takes over Indian Reality TV (and our hearts).

5. They will tell you about “chosen families” before you know what that means.

6. That scene created by Gauri Khan Kal Ho Naa ho That was stranger than I expected.

7. Karan Johar’s autobiography Bollywood admits not to do so.

8 Dostana The closet scene that first sparked gay panic between us.

9. When Troy Shivan dropped flowers and the queer internet exploded.

10. Ayushmannkhurrana plays a gay man Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan.

11. when sex education It gave us queer teens with genuine emotion as well as tragic ratios.

12. Please give me 4 more shots! And then there’s the scene where Uman appears.

13. When Manbendra Singh Gohir appeared as a gay royal Oprah.

14. KalkiKoechlin in Straws and margaritas– Keyer, invalid, brown, authentic.

15. ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga He yells the word “lesbian” in Bollywood movies.

16. Kapoor & Sons They gave me a gay character that wasn’t a punchline.

17. Arigall We sat in silence.

18. when Made in heaven He gave me a storyline for Curran and didn’t hold back.

Are you still waiting for a school syllabus that mentions section 377, history of drugs, or selected families? same. Until then, we’ll play the queer pop culture curriculum and rewrite the rules.
