sit together hollywood reportercostume designer Hannah Pooley explained her choices for dressing the two leading men as Ilya Rozanov (Story) and Shane Hollander (Williams).

“I wasn’t really into fashion for this show. I tried to keep it really grounded, but still ambitious,” she said overall.

“It’s hidden and has some weird coding,” Pury told The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t think in Slavic culture that’s what they’re trying to do. But to us it reads that way,” she said.

As for Hollander’s wardrobe, Pury said the clothes she made received particular attention online and surprised her. It was a comfortable-looking fleece jacket worn by the Canadian team when it participated in the Sochi Olympics.

“I don’t know if we always get to choose what becomes iconic,” Pury said of the moment the jacket went viral, including being recreated and petitioning the real-life Canadian team to include it as part of its merchandise for the upcoming Winter Olympics.

As for how the character’s style would evolve in season 2, Pury again suggested two approaches to Rozanov and Hollander.

Regarding the former, he suggested that not much has changed, arguing that “how people grow up, how they see themselves and how they dress has a lot to do with their comfort and sense of identity.”

She added that there is a “reinvention of self that can happen at a certain point” and that Rozanov may have found himself in it at the end of season 1…

And with Hollander, Pury mentioned “modest” steps toward a more queer wardrobe. “Maybe he’ll start wearing necklaces,” she thought.
