Do you remember what the audition process was like? Grey’s Anatomy?
Let me tell you, I lived in LA for eight years and read very little. Grey’s Anatomy The office was the hardest office to get into because everyone wanted to be on the show. And I was never seen. Never. I’ve never auditioned. Then I moved to New York and received a taped audition. And at that time, I no one watches the tape. And I didn’t know anyone in New York. I called one girl I knew. I was like, “Girl, if you can take this picture by 9 a.m. tomorrow, I can send it to you, but if not, I won’t do it.” Luckily she was free. We put it on tape and then forgot about it.
Then two weeks later they called me and asked me to come play Levi. And at that point, it was just a one-episode guest spot. And it ended up being eight years of the most impactful storytelling we’ve ever been able to do. But I almost never did it. I thought, There’s no way I’d hire this awkward, skinny kid for this purpose. Grey’s Anatomyeverything is here, for example, hot guys. no way!
It’s wild to remember that Levi didn’t come as an intern at first either.
I was a medical student. I wasn’t even attached to it. Also, Janine Mason, who played San Bello, was in my intern class, and she and I were really good friends in acting class for about five years before that. She ends up booking an internship. And I just finished an episode or two. So when I got back to New York, I thought, “Oh my god, I’m going to love it. This set is so much fun.” And then I ended up appearing in the same episode, so I thought: Wait… am I an intern?! This is crazy! So that’s how I found out because I happened to know another girl who booked it.
