Autumn rolls fast and it means fresh entertainment seasons on both our screens, short days, long nights, and both our screens, so there are plenty of options for you when deciding how to fill those extra hours evenings. As always, Blade will be here to provide an overview of new movies and shows that your path is coming for the next few months. Our listings in order of release date are listed below.

“Helluva Boss: Special”

September 10th, Prime Video

Queer animation fans are looking forward to the new products of Vivienne “Vivziepop” Medrano, whose adult animated musical black comedy web series (yes, we know it’s a lot of descriptors) and its spinoff “Helluva Boss” won the Legion of the late teens/early 20s. The latter show, set in hell, revolves around business driven by employment attacks run by IMPS ragtag crews. Including multiple LGBTQ characters (gay, bi, pan, trance, etc.), it is set to the same fictional “Hell’s Eres” as “Hazbin”, but otherwise it’s a standalone experience. To celebrate its September debut on Prime Video Platform (the first two existing seasons are now available and there are promises for the future), Medrano has created a new remake of the series pilot (which originally aired in 2019). Evil fun!

“dream” [Drømmer]

September 12th, VOD

For fans of Queer International Cinema, this Norwegian drama from writer-director Dag Johan Haugerud ensures you check all the boxes you need. The interim installment of a trilogy about non-traditional intimacy (the other two films are entitled “Sex” and “Love”), which falls in love with her French teacher (Selome Emetu), documents her feelings in writing, and creates tension within the family, giving them charming dreams and hidden lengths. The Golden Bear winner at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival offers a Scandinavian perspective on generational changes in attitudes regarding relationships, sexuality and social norms.

“Downton Abbey: Grand Finale”

September 12th, theater

It’s hard to imagine a “Downton Abbey” without the late Maggie Smith, but the incredibly popular high-brow soap opera about the interwoven lives of the wealthy Crawleys of England in the early 20th century and their servants, regardless of that, returns to the last one installment. This time, the clan faces disaster after finding out that Mary (Michelle Dockery) is at the heart of a public scandal that puts households at risk of financial disasters and social stigma. Crawleys and their loyal staff, unlike ever, must embrace change as they face the next generation leads to an uncertain future. It makes me wonder whether what is being promoted for “next generation” and “future” is, after all, a “grand finale.” Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and all the remaining beloved cast will be back with some new faces to become a must-see film event for fans.

“The History of Sound”

September 12th, theater

One of the most anticipated and bizarre titles of the year, this epic gay romance of South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus (“Beauty”, “Moffee”), traces the passionate relationship between two young musicologists (Paul Mezcal and Josh O’Connor). A love story is set against the social constraints of the early 1900s. It is also a deep exploration of music as an expression of humanity, which somehow makes the love story even better. Loving and moving performances from the main men of Hot Ticket (we know that most people can see this just for Mezcal, O’Connor, or both, and it’s completely understandable), and the idyllic idyllic beauty that evokes the mystics of the sturdy “brokeback mountain,” it makes all the queer classics.

“Brethren”

September 16th, VOD

Favorite for this award-winning queer festival is an adult buddy film about his estranged best friend (Dennis Shepherd), a young undocumented immigrant (Rafael Silva) facing unexpected reunion with his “The Charming Bachelor” (as the official summary places it). Together they “depart on a heartfelt journey to prevent the expulsion of Javi from the only country he ever called his hometown.” It is timely in its subject and appealing to focus on friendship, which is definitely on our watch list.

“Gen V, Season 2”

September 17th, Prime Video

The popular and thrilling spinoff series from “The Boys” returns to the second season, continuing the American first university saga to the sole university for superheroes, compete for talented students (and moral boundaries) for the school’s top honors and compete for the opportunity to join an elite team of international world class, but the school’s dark secrets lighten up.

“Plain Cross”

September 19th, theater (limited release)

This hot-promised Sundance Audience Award winner comes from writer-director Carmen Emimi and stars Tom Bryce as a young secret cop in New York in the mid-90s. He is in his closet, which is a task that makes him more and more uncomfortable. More problems arise when he falls into a potential “criminal” (Russell Toby, complete and glorious “daddy” mode) on his mission. Yes, it’s still a life story in an age of preventative homophobia, and yes, we hope we don’t have to look at something else, but given the current social environment in America, it’s probably important to remind us of what it is. Don’t worry – it’s not all dark, and there are some seriously sexy chemistry between that main man.

“Brilliant Mind” Season 2

September 22nd, NBC

The medical procedure drama starring Zachary Kindt, “inspired by psychological author and neurologist Oliver Sack,” along with his team at Bronx General Hospital, as “inspired by psychologist and neurologist Oliver Sack), will delve into “the mystery of the mind,” and Dr. Wolf and his team continue to show up as his team at Bronx General continue to show up.

“English Teacher”, Season 2

September 25th, FX

Also back in the second round is this popular and well-received comedy from creator and star Brian Jordan Alvarez. This season he finds himself fighting a variety of divisive issues, including climate change, Covid, military recruitment, and student phone use, while also struggling to maintain his relationship with his fellow teacher (Jordan First Man) apart from his work life. The first season, a refreshing, unfiltered, unfiltered comedy of social errors under the eyes, was an unexpected joy. I hope Alvarez and his crew can continue their magic.

“boots”

October 9th, Netflix

Based on Greg Coop White’s memoir (“Pink Marine”), this new Dramedy series stars Miles Heiser as a closet teenager who joined the military during the 1990s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Ask” era. Another timely reminder of what a bad old life was like (for people of the opposite sex anyway). It also stars Cedric Cooper, Ana Ayora, Angus O’Brien, Dominic Goodman, Kieron Moore, Nicholas Logan, Rico Pear, and Liam Oh, Vera Farmiga and Max Parker.

“Spider woman kissing”

October 10th, theater

This is big. The much-anticipated screen adaptation of Kander and Ebb’s Tony Award-winning musical – itself adapted from the Manuel Puig novel, also adapted to a 1985 non-music film starring William Hart and Raul Julia, directing Diego’s editor with Bill Condon (Chicago, Dream Girl) and Diego’s editor with Diego Lion and Diego Verna. The story of two discordant cellmates in an Argentine prison – the glamorous, strange window dresser imprisoned for a Marxist revolutionary and “public indecency” – the latter will not tell the plot of his favorite film musical that gave him inspiration and hope. Moving forward through the film trailer promises a visually dazzling cinema experience, but the talent of the star gives great hope for a film that withstands the pedigree of its source material. But let’s face it.

“After the hunt”

October 10th, theater

Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (“Calling Me by Your Name”, “Challenger” and “Queer”)’s latest film, also in two years, is a thriller in which Julia Roberts gets caught up in allegations of abuse, including a student and a colleague. It is unclear if there are any direct strange plot details here. In particular, given the track record of the Italian-born manager, both methods should be boiled down to implicit attractions, as Guadagnino says he hasn’t dealt with “sexuality and love” as other recent jobs have done. He also starred Rio Mehiel (“Mutto”), Michael Stullberg and Chloe Sevigny along with Ayo Edebili (“Bear”) and Andrew Garfield (“Tick, Tick…Boom!”), and scored Trent Reznoll and Atticus Ross.

“Blue Moon”

October 17th, theater

Oscar-winning film director Richard Linklater will be reunited with his favourite muse and collaborator Ethan Hawk. This focuses on closet gay songwriter Laurentz Hart (Hawk). The groundbreaking musical, written by Rogers along with new collaborator Oscar Hammerstein III, began a long career as a Broadway legend, with Hart accelerating his tragic slides to alcoholism and death. Andrew Scott (as Rogers) and Margaret Quarry co-star as Paramar, half of the musical genius of destiny. It is guaranteed to be a strong view of one of America’s most tragic musical giants, and by awarding awards from the heavy batsman “A-list” cast, we are sure this is not to be missed.

“Queen of the Dead”

October 24th, theater

Director Tina Romero is behind this Wildride horror comedy about the zombie apocalypse that breaks out in Brooklyn on a huge warehouse party night. Starring Katie O’Brian, Jaquel Spivey, Thomas Matos, Nina West, Quincy Dan Baker, Jack Haven, Cheyenne Jackson, Dominique Jackson, Margaret Chou

“header”

October 29th, theater

Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s classic “Headda Gabler” gets a strange adaptation with a new interpretation of Nia Dacosta’s 19th century drama. Tessa Thompson takes on the title role, and Nina Hoss plays her important others – here, she transforms into the female Irene instead of the play’s original Ezirato – in a matchup that looks epic from the short glimpse of the trailer being given. We’ve always been huge fans of Queering Classics, and there’s the talented (and openly strange) Thompson to star in as one of the most iconic female characters in history. There’s no doubt this will become an age movie.
