As President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address inside the U.S. Capitol, touting his accomplishments and targeting political opponents, progressive lawmakers gathered just outside to protest.

Their message is blunt: Life in this country is not getting better for many Americans, especially LGBTQ people.

According to Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution, the president must annually “provide Congress with information regarding the State of the Union.” The Annual Address aims to outline achievements to date and look ahead to the year ahead. This year, President Trump delivered the longest State of the Union address in U.S. history, clocking in at one hour and 48 minutes. He spoke about immigration, the domestic agenda of “law and order,” the foreign policy of “peace through strength,” and what he called the left’s “culture wars,” especially as they involve transgender youth and Christian values.

But a year into what he calls the “Trump 2.0” era, the picture painted outside the Capitol stands in stark contrast to the picture painted inside.

transgender youth

In one of the most poignant moments of his speech, Trump spotlighted Sage Blair and used her story to portray gender-affirming care as coercive and dangerous. Framing the issue as one of parental rights and government overreach, he told lawmakers and viewers:

“In the gallery tonight are Sage Blair and her mother Michelle. In 2021, Sage was 14 years old when school officials in Virginia tried to socially transition Sage into her new gender. They treated her as a boy and hid it from her parents. Isn’t it hard to believe? Eventually, a confused Sage ran away from home.”

“After she was found in deplorable conditions in Maryland, a left-wing judge refused to return Sage to her parents because they did not immediately declare that their daughter was their son. Sage was thrown into an all-boys state facility and suffered terribly for a long time. But today all that is forgotten, for Sage is a proud and wonderful young woman with a full scholarship to Liberty University.

“Sage and Michelle, please stand up. And thank you for your incredible courage. And who can believe that we’re even talking about things like this? Fifteen years ago, if someone was here and said that, they’d say what’s wrong with him? But now we have to say it, because it’s happening across many states without even telling the parents.”

“But certainly, we can all agree that no state can allow children to be taken from their parents’ arms and changed into a new gender against their parents’ will. Who would believe we were talking about that? We have to ban it, and we must ban it now. Look, no one is standing up. These people are crazy. I’m telling you, they’re crazy.”

This story, presented as a summary of the national crisis, became the basis for President Trump’s renewed calls to ban gender-affirming care. LGBTQ advocates, and those familiar with Prime Minister Blair’s story, argue that the situation is far more complex than has been described, and that using a single anecdote to justify widespread federal regulation puts transgender people, especially young people, at greater risk.

Equality Virginia said the president’s comments are part of a broader effort to strip transgender Americans of access to care. In a statement to the Blade, the organization said:

“Tonight, the president is choosing to redouble his efforts to destroy access to evidence-based, life-saving medical care.

“Rather than allowing families and doctors to make deeply personal medical decisions without interference from the federal government, or allowing schools to respond with nuance and compassion without putting marginalized children at risk, the president is instead advocating reckless, one-size-fits-all political control.

“At a time when Virginians are concerned about rising costs, economic uncertainty, and aggressive immigration enforcement that disrupts communities and families, attacking transgender youth is a blatant political distraction from the real challenges facing this country. Virginia families and health care providers don’t need Donald Trump dictating what care they need and don’t need.”

For many in the LGBTQ community, the rhetoric in the chamber reflected actions the administration had already taken.

Earlier this month, the Pride flag was removed from Stonewall National Monument at the direction of higher-ups at the National Park Service. Community members returned to the scene, raised the flag again, and filed a lawsuit claiming the removal violated federal law. For advocates, the move was symbolic, a signal that even the legacy of LGBTQ resistance is not immune.

immigration and fear

Immigrants were in the majority at both events.

Inside the chamber, Trump boasted about the hundreds of thousands of immigrants being held in makeshift facilities. Outside, Democratic lawmakers described these same facilities as concentration camps and detailed the human toll of the administration’s policy enforcement.

Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) painted a grim picture of communities living in fear to the crowd:

“People disappear into thin air. Quiet mornings are interrupted by sickening violence. Students are assaulted by ICE agents sitting outside high schools, hard-working residents are ripped from their cars in front of their children. Families desperately search for any trace of loved ones who stop answering their phones or responding to emails…This is un-American. It’s illegal, it’s illegal, it’s unconstitutional. And people are going to stand up and fight for Gladys Vega and for everyone.” Poor people need to know that today’s State of the Union address is the beginning of a long fight that will bring about the end of Republican control of the U.S. House and Senate in 2026. ”

Speakers emphasized that LGBTQ immigrants are often particularly vulnerable, facing detention and precarious conditions in the United States after fleeing persecution abroad. For them, immigration crackdowns and attacks on transgender health care are not separate battles but intertwined fronts in a broader cultural and political war.

queer leadership

After speaking alongside Robert Garcia, Human Rights Campaign President Kelly Robinson took to the stage, turning the frozen crowd’s anger into resolve.

Garcia later told the Blade that visibility is important in moments like this, especially when LGBTQ rights are under direct attack.

“We need a clear understanding of what is happening in our country right now,” Garcia said. “We have a president who is leading the largest government cover-up in modern history. The largest sex trafficking ring in modern history is currently being covered up by Donald Trump and Pam Bondi at the Department of Justice. Why are we protecting the powerful and wealthy men who have abused and raped women and children in this country? Why is our government protecting these men at this moment? In my place on Capitol Hill, there is a woman named Annie Farmer, who has both endured horrific abuse by Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. As we move forward with this investigation, we are always trying to get justice for the survivors. And while Donald Trump may be trying to deceive us, the message we are sending to him is that our investigation is just beginning, and we are going to get justice for the survivors.”

He later told the Blade that bringing queer leaders to the forefront is itself an act of resistance.

“It was a great honor to speak with Mr. Kelly,” said the California representative. Kelly is doing a great job… It’s important to have queer voices, trans voices, gay voices in protests, and I think she’s a great example of that. It is important to remind the nation that the rights of our communities continue to be attacked, and then we must take a stand. We must stand up against this too. ”

Robinson echoed that call, urging LGBTQ Americans, especially young people, not to lose hope even as the administration’s rhetoric escalates.

“The hundreds of thousands of people who stand up for you every day will not flinch and give up an inch until every member of our community is protected, especially our children, especially our transgender and queer kids. I can only hope that the power of millions of voices will drown out that loud voice, because that’s what I really want people to see at HRC. 3.6 million members, 75 million people who come together every day to support our communities, our voters, the people who decide who to vote for based on issues that are relevant to our communities, our job is to make sure those people stand up and make sure our kids can see us and hear our voices, because we don’t get in the way.”

boycott and warning

The list of Democrats who boycotted the State of the Union speech included Sens. Ruben Gallego, Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Chris Murphy, Adam Schiff, Tina Smith, Chris Van Hollen and dozens more.

For those gathered outside and viewers watching the livestream hosted by MoveOn, the behind-the-scenes show was more than just symbolic. That was a warning.

While the president spoke of strength and success in the chamber, LGBTQ Americans, especially transgender youth, were once again targeted politically. And outside the Capitol, lawmakers and advocates made it clear that the fight for their rights is far from over.
