FBI Documented Over 2,400 Anti-LGBTQ Hate Crimes in 2024

Over 2,400 anti-LGBTQ hate crimes were reported in 2024, according to data from the FBI’s newly released hate crime statistics report.

The FBI reports that there were 2,413 single Bias incidents targeting LGBTQ people. Of these cases, 81% target actual or perceived sexual orientations, and 19% target substantial or perceived gender identity.

In particular, the 2024 Sexual Orientation Category includes 25 cases in which heterosexual people are said to be victims of biased animal crimes.

Crimes targeting sexual orientation account for 17.2% of all reported hate crimes in 2024, according to the FBI. Race and ethnicity accounted for 51.8%, religion accounted for 24.6%, and gender identity accounted for 4.1%.

The FBI reports that national hate crimes have reached the second highest level since Congress began pursuing anti-bias cases in 1990. The group that decomposed statistics by victim identity, with Black and Jewish Americans being the most frequently targeted by LGBTQ people.

Saramouah, head of Glaad’s alert desk, which tracks hatred and extremism targeting LGBTQ people in the United States, called it “cary” for the number of anti-LGBTQ hate crimes and said “immediate action” was needed to fight such crimes.

“The FBI hate crime statistics are essential for the federal government to understand how to track and fight bias-motivated crimes, but these numbers never tell the perfect story,” Moore said in a statement. “We must continue to listen and raise the voices of our local LGBTQ leaders and community partners to mitigate violence against all communities.



GLAAD’s alert desk recorded 932 anti-LGBTQ incidents in 2024, with an average of 2.5 per day, with over half targeting transgender and genderless people. The group links the rise to anti-transgender rhetoric and rising laws at both the federal and state levels.

“[A]In a statement, President of the Human Rights Campaign, Kelly Robinson, said: The FBI has revealed a horrible reality. Our community continues to be a target for violence. That is unacceptable. ”

Robinson said the hate crime data “revealed a national emergency right in front of us.”
