Sean Melloi, a longtime advocate for Democratic National Committee (DNC) and LGBTQ representatives in Pennsylvania, has been elected to chair the DNC’s LGBTQ Caucus.
As a director of LGBTQ engagement at the DNC, a member of the Pennsylvania Committee on LGBTQ Issues, a victory fund strategist to help select more LGBTQ candidates, and a member of LGBTQ engagement, serving as a staff member of Pennsylvania District 18th Council, Meloy advocates for LGBTQ rights at the local, state and national levels.
“It’s an honor to be Chair of the DNC’s LGBTQ Caucus at a very important moment for our community, parties and countries,” Meloy said. “Although LGBTQ Americans have made incredible progress, I know that our rights and freedoms are attacked by Donald Trump and Republicans every day. I look forward to working with our grassroots allies to advocate, mobilize and fight Democrats to advocate for, mobilize and fight Democrats to advocate for, mobilize and elect Democrats to fight, defend, mobilize and fix the broken system that serves people who already have money and power.”
As the Caucus Chair, Melloi will lead efforts to strengthen LGBTQ political power and advance equality. This is a role that has important challenges from the Trump administration and Republican lawmakers. The main one of them is the ongoing efforts to limit and sometimes eliminate federal funds for gender-affirming surgeries, which are part of a broader push to roll back LGBTQ rights.
The LGBTQ Caucus represents strange DNC members across the country. Melloi will be joined by the vice-chairman of Martha McDavit Poug (she/she – overseas), as well as the secretary and record-breaking secretary of Matt Hughes (he/he – North Carolina), Vice-Chair of Civil Engagement, Katherine Jans (them/them – North Carolina) and Manny Crespin.
“Shaun has built up political power for LGBTQ people so that we can hear our voices at all levels of government,” said Earl Fowlkes, chairman of DNC LGBTQ Caucus. “We are thrilled that he will lead the Caucus during this pivotal time.”
The DNC has also elected several other LGBTQ leaders in key roles, joining Vice-Chair Malcolm Kenyatta and Chief Jason Lee on the party’s leadership team. Arizona’s Lewis Heredia was elected to chair the DNC Latin Caucus, and Andre Toryver was elected to lead the Youth Council.
The Post-DNC has elected the new chairman of the LGBTQ Caucus amid Trump’s anti-transpush.
