Delaware LGBTQ supporters are organizing opposition candidates in response to a planned protest against the drug branch in Rehoboth Beach on July 20th.
Members of St. Anne’s Church in Bethany Beach have announced plans to protest Sunday’s Drug Brunch at Gooley’s Grill, a gay-owned restaurant in Rehoboth Beach. In the church newsletter, they described the action as “a peaceful and legal rosary rally in the protest and reparation of Grill Re Hoboth Beach in Gooley, hosting a “drug branch” to normalize transgender and variants.”
The counterattack begins at 11:15am outside the restaurant and is organized by a coalition of local organizations including Sussex Pride, Individual Delaware, Hate, Camp Pre-Hoboth, Rehoboth Beach Pride, and the Delaware Anti-Violence Project.
“Rally aims to showcase overwhelming support for Gooley’s Grill, a beloved small business that exists as a beacon of diversity and acceptance in the Rehoboth Beach community,” read Sussex Pride’s press release.
The Rehoboth Beach Pride Festival will be held the day before July 19th.
“When we celebrate Rehoboth Beach Pride, all LGBTQ+ people, especially LGBTQ+ young people, should know that there are many faith communities out there that love and embrace us like we do.” “These members of Bethany Church in St. Anne are not talking for everyone.”
Goolee’s hosts drag a branch every third Sunday of the month. The show this week is sold out, but the gift shop is open. The restaurant opened in Ocean City in 2004 and moved to Rehoboth in 2014.
“As a permanent student of Jesus Christ, my faith has always taught me to love my neighbors, provide myself to strangers and reach out to those living in Fringe,” said Rev. Shelley D. McDade, parish president of All Saints Church & St. George’s Chapel. “Thank you Goolee, Goolee’s, for continuing to provide authentic dishes of love, acceptance and fun.”
