Chris Colfer receives death threat while appearing on ‘Glee’

“I loved role-playing…I loved creating other people and creating characters,” he said. “I loved the story. Never in a million years did I think fame would be part of my career…I got scared really quickly.”

“I was playing an openly gay teenager at a time when people didn’t like seeing openly gay teenagers on TV… It wasn’t welcomed. And immediately the death threats and safety risks started. I became very agoraphobic.”

Chris went on to say that the level of scrutiny and hatred he faced back then seems unthinkable in today’s climate, but it did happen. “It’s hard to explain now. Sometimes people don’t believe me because the world has changed so much for the better… But back then, in the early 2000s, it wasn’t acceptable to be gay,” he said.

“Late night talk show hosts lashed out at me, but I was totally fine with it because I was a gay kid. Politicians would say things about me in public, but it was totally fine with me because I was a gay kid. Megachurch pastors called me the Antichrist, and that was perfectly acceptable because I was a gay kid. No one defended me. No one came to my rescue.”

“When I talk to people about this, they say, ‘So what do you expect? You’re the gay kid in this movie.’ Glee. This is exactly what is going to happen. ”
