Kizzy always wanted to have children but put it off for a while so she could focus on her career. When she tried to get pregnant, she encountered infertility issues. For four years, she kept telling herself the same words. “It will happen when it happens.”

“Then weeks turned into months, and months turned into years, and as her brother and as someone who worshiped her, it’s hard to listen to that conversation,” Jones told BuzzFeed.

Jones said Kizzy became pregnant twice, but both ended in miscarriages.

“Then we had a conversation like, ‘What are you going to do now?’ At that point, she accepted that she needed to consider alternative routes,” Jones told BuzzFeed. “She went to the doctor, and the doctor basically said, ‘You can only get pregnant if your eggs are old. Your body is telling you that you can get pregnant. Only the eggs.’

Kizzy began researching IVF, considering egg donors and emailing companies that could help her with her fertility journey.

Mr. Jones came up with his own solution, which he told her bluntly. “If you want my eggs, you can have them.” Both Kizzy and Jones dismissed the comment at the time. In their private lives, both of them began to engage in research.

Jones, who is transgender, has been taking testosterone for about 10 years. He still had eggs, but it was unclear whether years of hormone therapy had affected his fertility. But during her research, Jones found several stories about trans men who became pregnant with their own eggs.

“One of the first things you’re told when you transition is, ‘Say goodbye to your fertility,'” Jones told BuzzFeed. “But I ended up getting tested and they said I was basically a baby-producing machine. I had a lot of eggs.”

After doctors approved the viability of Jones’ eggs, the brothers had only one question left.

Jones had a lot to consider, he said. So donating his eggs to his sister basically means a medical transition of several weeks. Once the process began in earnest, Kizzy and Jones were required to attend counseling sessions with therapists. This required him to consider all possible worst-case scenarios and decide whether egg donation was worth it, he says.

“I wrote a list of all the things I thought could go wrong,” Jones told BuzzFeed. “I thought, ‘If Kizzy and I stopped talking tomorrow, would I still be happy if I did this?’ I thought, ‘I don’t care. I’m doing it because I want to.'”

Jones had a lot of plans for his end. To prepare for the actual egg retrieval process, he had to take various medications and undergo hormone injections. During those two weeks, his plan was to keep himself busy, have a therapist on call, and mentally prepare himself to deal with the discomfort if the time came.

“It’s been a long time since estrogen was my driving force. My north star was the fact that I’m a completely different person. My identity as a man, so to speak, is not dictated by testosterone,” Jones told BuzzFeed.

Still, Jones said there were some difficult times. One is the night before egg retrieval. He says he felt his ovaries swell and his hormone levels were at an all-time high.

“I was crying about terrible things that I don’t normally cry about,” he told BuzzFeed.

The other thing is when I get my period after restarting testosterone. Doctors said it was unlikely that drugs or injections would bring her periods back, but it was not unheard of.

He was at the gym when he felt what he describes as a welling up feeling. Jones said she remembers feeling alone as she sat in gray sweatpants, trying to figure out how to deal with her first period in 10 years.

“I’m just isolated and very worried, and my hormones aren’t right,” he told BuzzFeed. “I said, ‘Kenny, you just need to breathe. Just breathe. If you bleed, people are more likely to think you cut your butt cheek or something than they are to think you’re trans and on your period.’

When he got home from the gym, he decided to record his feelings. He has been a content creator for seven years, so this felt like a natural fit.

He had been documenting the entire egg donation process, but he didn’t initially plan to make it all public, or even share it with the world. Initially, he just wanted the video as a memento. Jones and her sister plan to continue documenting her pregnancy and how they plan to have future conversations with their child about the origins of their family. But for now, Jones said he’s looking forward to being a great uncle and fulfilling one wish.
