Big Freedia not only bounces music and bop this weekend, but also brings a message of hope, healing and pure joy.
Just before her doubleheader at the festival, including a special main stage appearance with the San Francisco gay boys chorus, the Queen of Bounce dropped her most personal and powerful project: the Gospel Album of the Title I’ll press it against you.
The new record is a soulful departure from a high energy club anthem that fans may know her. Instead, I’ll press it against you We use the roots of Freedia churches to deliver tracks full of spirituality, celebration and love.
“I’m from the gospel world,” Freedore told Gaty in an interview before the festival. “I’m a baby in the church and God put it in his heart to bring out this gospel album. We represent people that there’s so much to celebrate in life right now.”
Freedia has always been a loud and negative acceptance of her identity, but this album is For everyone – Black, white, gay, straight, honoured, question, or something in between. “This album is comprehensive,” she said. “It’s for all people. I wanted to be pure and wholeheartedly without judgment.
The album features collaborations with long-time friends and artists she personally reached out to, including queer gospel icon Billy Porter. “Everyone I called, “What a god, are you doing the gospel?” And I was like, “Yes.” And they were like, “I’m down.” ”
Freedia’s message is simple: Connect with higher forces you. “Many people feel they have no connection to the church or congregation, but this album gives them the opportunity to regain their connection with God,” she said. “We don’t need buildings. We need personal relationships.”
The album’s title track, “Pressing On,” stands as the mantra for Freedia. “Everyone has to keep pushing in the world we live in,” she said. “Everything else is fine.”
And in the meantime I’ll press it against you Let God be centered, it is also centered joy -Freedia spreads across the stage, whether it’s an intimate club or a major festival around the world. “I go to festivals all over the world and bring joy to people,” she said. “And it’s such a great feeling to have me bring a bit of New Orleans with me everywhere.”
This energy will undoubtedly fill San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park this weekend. Freedia will perform on a more intimate Dolores stage, and a San Francisco gay male chorus on the main stage, playing in Full Surcal’s moments.
Whether you’re religious, spiritual, or simply vibe, big Freedia wants I’ll press it against you To be a source of comfort and connection.
So does she want the listeners to leave with them?
“A little more love in their hearts,” she said. “And the power to continue.”
As Big Freedia celebrates her deep personal gospel album release I’ll press it against youHer journey is marked not only by spiritual growth but also by deep sadness.
Just a few months before he was on stage on a foreign land, Freedia lost Devon Hearst, who died in May at the age of 38 due to complications of diabetes, 20 years of partner. In a social media post on Hartfeld, Freedia explained that the loss was devastating and that he wrote that he had passed away peacefully to his beloved family.
Hearst was more than a partner – he was Freedia’s anchor. Their twenty-year relationship was built on love, trust and mutual respect. This was a constant through the highs and lows of the rise in Freedoor fame. His death she shared left an irreplaceable void.
Freedia says this new album – her return to gospel roots – is not only a celebration of faith, but a reminder to cherish life and love while we have it. “I’ll press it against you She said. “Even if you feel pain is impossible, it’s about moving forward,” she said.
In both her music and mourning, Freedia continues to show the strength of her spirit and the power of love to endure.
