“Something for everyone” is an overused tagline, but for this fall DMV theater season, it’s mostly true. And much of the work is directly or indirectly queer. Here’s a look at some that are already open and some that are planned for the future.
Theater J enters its new season with How to Become a Korean Woman (through September 22), Seung Mi Chome’s comical and heartfelt story about finding her biological family in Seoul, South Korea. edcjcc.org
Woolly Mammoth Theater The show opens with Tony Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ latest play, The Comeuppance (through October 6th).

signature theater opens with the DC premiere of Eboni Booth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Primary Trust (through October 20th). Booth’s tender tale of self-discovery and bonding, filled with contemporary humor, will be followed by the signature large-scale musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (October 29 – January 12), by Stephen A musical comedy set in Sondheim’s classic Rome will be performed. GALA Hispanic Theater The season opener, Gustavo Ott’s Hugo’s 22+ Wedding (through September 29), is based on a true story. Performed in Spanish and with easy-to-understand English subtitles, Ott’s raucous story attempts to cover the various scenarios immigrants experience through their many weddings. The cast includes actor Carlos Castillo as Hugo, a quiet postal worker, and Victor Salinas as Elmer, a gay writer seeking refuge. Directed by Jose Zayas. galatheater.org.
mosaic troupe Atlas Performing Arts Center presents Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill (through Oct. 6), a musical play about jazz legend and queer icon Billie Holiday starring Roz White. The film will be directed by Reginald L. Douglas, artistic director of Mosaic. mosaictheater.org
ford theater is a “witty and revelatory” one-man play “Mr. Lincoln” (September 20-October 13) starring Scott Bakula (stage and screen actor best known for TV’s “Quantum Leap”) will be performed. ford.org
Expats Theater (also in Atlas) opens with “Marlene” (September 28-October 20), starring Karin Roznicek as the legendary Dietrich. Dietrich is a great star who is famous for defying social and gender conventions while surprising the world with her glamorous career. Expatstheate.com
This fall, George Mason University’s Center for the Arts will host a variety of events, including, among others, “An Evening with Lea Salonga” (Saturday, September 28).
Tony Award-winning singer and actress Lea Salonga will headline the event. 2024 ARTS by George! The benefit concert will feature hits from his 40-year Broadway career and animated films. Philippine-born Salonga is the creator of the role of Kim in Miss Saigon and the first Asian cast member to play Eponine in Les Misérables on Broadway.

kennedy center offers laughs and nostalgia with “Clue,” a mystery novel based on the fan-favorite 1985 Paramount film and inspired by the classic Hasbro board game (September 17-October 6) I will. Next up is the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (October 11-20).

Autumn cabaret is a huge success gay men’s choir in washington d.c. Soloists will share heartwarming stories and songs about their travel adventures (October 19th at 2, 5 and 8 p.m.). Folger Theater Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” (October 1st – November 10th), inspired by director Raymond O. Caldwell. The diverse and eclectic cast includes Cole Taylor and Caro Reyes Rivera as star-crossed lovers, Luz Nicholas, Deirdre Rawan Stearns, and popular actor Fran Tapia as Lady Capulet. studio theater will present the memory play “Summer of 1976” (opening November 13th) by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Auburn (“Proof”).
